Roughly 3 years. Didn't get serious until Last Year. That when we hatched a grip. Right now they're all mostly traditional yellow leg Radio, with some radio x green legged sweater sprinkled in the mix. Last month I picked up a Hatch and another Grey broodcock as my Radio broodock died in a freak suicide. Also picked up 5 hatch hens and 1 grey/hatch. Those are currently with the Hatch BC. The Grey bc will go with 6 radio hens and that 1 green legged sweater, my original hens. So I'm pretty much a newbie, but I'm confident I'll churn out some good looking ornaments. Lol
Thats how I roll... Hybrid vigor... Battle crosses. I think thats the way all the greats have done it... And everybody tries to replicate their fowl as "pure breeds" (but in reality the greats were making great crosses).

Performance breeding...

Thanks Shubin! Completely agree with your statement. These are different times, unfortunately, but no one can stop me from raising and preserving these magnificent fowl. Its like another job, one that I enjoy, but they've been keeping me out of trouble, so no complaints here lol

Care must be taken with making all the crosses. What are known as battle crosses are / were not random crosses. In most instances they were crosses between two true breeding lines that were previously compared to other crosses and pure stock in the pit. Most crosses are not crosses likely to be intentionally created by skilled breeders because they have not been vetted. The random crossing for looks is a faster way to devalue a group of games.

can you explain how a breeder breeds true? Mind y'all I'm only doing this as a hobby, I will never be a "great" or an actual breeder.....unless they bring back the pits....which won't ever happen.
