Currently emphasis is on feather replacement although we will be looking closer for characteristics associated with gender. We will do a swap if male. Last image with color creeping in as physiology of feather growth metabolism changes.

I did it because I dont have grass growing. I cant grow it on the ground because its like concrete.
That is one of my compost beds... I kept lid over it so it wouldnt burn in the sun... Green house might work well in your colder area.

My plan is to have 2 grass beds and alternate cycles. While one is growing I'll start sprouting the other.

I need to find good science fair project for my 5th grader... wanted to do something Ag-ish... any ideas?

Lots of ideas as I help with such almost every year. What are his / her interest? Vertebrates are tougher but not impossible to work with. Invertebrates, especially aquatic are easy on the rules side.

I am not opposed to plants or bug projects. PM with links or ideas.. We got a while , so no rush.
