Wonder if they'd make a difference
i feed southern states rooster booster 20% protein pellets. I mix with 5 grain scratch though to bring the average protein level down to somewhere between 16 - 18 % give or take. Add extra whole corn in winter. The general concensus from guys who know far more than I is that too much protein is not good for em especially if calcium isn't bumped up too.
Short answer would be higher protein grower would be fine til around 6 months or so.

The gamebird grower crumbles type stuff will make their crap stink to high h*ll too. Believe me I know. I don't like crumbles aside from starter since they waste a lot.
Some probably mix it in though. I wanna say it's around 28% protein or close to it. Something like this is most likely too high in protein. Like sdm111 said that stuff is designed for game birds. Pheasants, quail etc..

that's the stuff I remember. I think it was a crumble.

Also I heard about using a pellet for quail as a grower. But that's all I don't know any specifics or even a brand

I agree with Havoc, 16-18% protein is more than enough. The game bird diets use more soybean mean to get that higher protein content and is generally used for turkeys, pheasants, quail, etc. The soy bean meal is not as digestable, but works for the slower growing game birds. The higher protein really isn't needed for chickens. Broiler chickens have the best feed to gain ratio of just about any meat animal and most broiler feeds run in the low 20's for percent protein.

A good layer pellet works well once the birds are grown.

The southern states rooster booster now called flock balancer. Thanks to the hippies. Actually smells pretty good compared to layer pellets (slight sweet smell)Occasionally I'll switch or just give em layer pellets if the feed store is out of stock and I can tell they don't like it as well. They'll eat it but not as fast. The southern states pellets isn't dusty either. The rooster booster 5 grain scratch is the best I've found around here. All the other well known brands are dusty, and filled with useless cracked corn.

I prefer to feed mine chocolate glazed munchkins and bacon. Occasionally I'll drizzle hot fudge over their feed. The kind u put in the microwave.
