Ugh fell asleep and woke up to a roaring sound. Scared the sh*t outta me. Wasn't expecting bad weather. It was hailing, thunder and lightening. I thought the sound of the hail on the roof was wind and went running outside expecting 100 mph winds. Nah just some hail.
That sure gets your heart going in a hurry! It passed through here last night and I thought it was pouring down rain all of a sudden.

Fluff. What we do for fun in MO.

Doing what we do makes reproducing difficult so you got to be tough. Looking like we do means somebody may need to be drunk to reproduce.

Do you actually get under water or what? Seem like all you would need is waders and shoulder length gauntlets. You can catch crayfish with a fly rod too. Any kind of small nymph pattern dredged along the bottom and they'll grab a hold of em. Seems easier then looking like little john splashing around in the water like in Robin Hood men in tights.
Your missing the coffee can heater.

We get underwater / complete immersion at only two locations. Student got a pic of only one of those and not while we were actually working.

Below is best. Places where we got in over are heads required a lot of porter action of water sampling supplies making so camera usage did not get as much time.

Portion of stream between two in front (I am on the right) and student in background was up to my neck. I am 6'2". Water very clear making so depth difficult to gauge until you step in. A couple of honey holes over my head and I was only one able to operate at that depth with current. Most captured at that location at depth where head had to go under water. At every sight we did everything we could to keep from getting in that deep but once we did capture rate jumped way up for larger specimens and especially for Hubb's Crayfish. Next time we will stop being sissies and go straight for the deep.

Interesting stuff. When water clarity is gin clear a dark colored rock turns into a 6 ft hole. Current in small streams is always stronger than it looks ain't it. Is there trout in them streams or smallmouth?

Some scour holes around bridges exceed 12 feet. Water is gin clear almost all the time. Current can be an issue following rain events. I know my way around spates but same events kill people every year in MO, especially when kids and . or cars are involved.

Streams we are currently working have Smallmouth Bass but no trout. Most trout streams to south near Arkansas border. I was able to catch a bunch of Smallmouth Bass and Rockbass with my hands. I doubt even the best angler could match what I can do with hands when water is cold. My tech, a competitive bass fisherman, had a cow when he saw me catching fish with my hands. It was also his first time to get out and see the fish truly in their element. Next spring he will see them tending broods for the first time. It has been hard to get people out to see the neat stuff that occurs before water warms enough to mix it with alcohol which is a requirement for in-water activities for most here.

A couple dozen nets, some melt aka beef pancreas, some metal shower curtain clips swamp/bayou/river water elbow to knee deep. A 10' piece of roseau cane and a couple sacks and you about to have a good time.

Can you at least tell people not to grab fish by the gills? That drives me nuts.

I consistently stress showing animals handled with love. Grabbing fish by gills nor lower jaw do I advocate. My rule is handle fish by whole body with wet hands or better yet not removing them from water at all. The government biologist and TV fisherpeople are better folks for hitting the audience you are concerned with.
