I consistently stress showing animals handled with love. Grabbing fish by gills nor lower jaw do I advocate. My rule is handle fish by whole body with wet hands or better yet not removing them from water at all. The government biologist and TV fisherpeople are better folks for hitting the audience you are concerned with.
ill handle bass by the lower jaw for a quick pic but that's it and the only fish I do that, they are tough and while I know it's not the most ideal sometimes with bass it's better to get them unhooked and back in the water quicker. Trout I catch rarely leave the water.
I see so many dead fish because of idiots that either don't care or don't know better. Especially with pickerel since they have teeth and are difficult to hold since they are so slimy. Most don't realize the damage they do to a fish by grabbing the gills or stripping the film off of them.
Most of the tv fisherman do the the grin and grab by the gills.

I really so not like holding the lower jaw so it is at right angle with body. Especially with 7 lb plus fish. When I have the bass pushing 10 lbs they are held with nets only as too valuable to kill with handling stress. I wish I could actually catch fish as big as I can raise that also do not keep swimming in even when hooked.

Stag still not roosting up. I have not seen him fly up to roost yet. He does show lots of man-fighter sign, worst I have ever had on my yard. Going to need to sit down with him soon before he gets strong enough to cause real pain.

About 8 days. I think he is pen raised in a manner that slows his adapting to my pen setups. He will come around. When quarantine ends after another week I will put a pullet in pen next to him where he will want to go after her. She will go up on roost and he should likely try to do same to get closer.

Have you tried putting him up on the roost after dark? Sometimes it takes a little coaxing for birds that have never seen a roost. I have some that it takes a week or so of training. It's a pain but eventually they get the idea.

I've had a few birds I had to put on the roost. Sometimes they'll spend another night or two on the ground but they usually get it within 4/5 days. I just do it at night too so no chance of em getting out on me and making a project out of a 5 min operation.

I also have a 10 x 10 dog pen not occupied. I can put him in there so no need for me to crawl around during the reroosting process. It is hard for me to get into pens for handling birds even at night. That is reason I spend so much effort training / taming.
