Yep. Do not trust them if birds are well away from trees. For me the mean bad things when on ground. Dead kid or lamb, or maybe a fish kill.

I've raised a few going through winter. Yours may be a bit younger though. Your right though it's a pain. As long as they're kept dry and the wind is off em for the most part they're fine. Plus a little extra feed.

What is getting me is the nutrition part. Mixes currently in use for adults fine. Attempts for young birds not making me happy. Base feed for production and plant based only.

I think the mad cow scare has a lot to do with plant protein based products. It's not worth the risk to feed companies to have animal based products on the premises. Any traces showed up in cattle feed would shut the whole plant down and the company would be liable.


A little fish meal might help, pricy stuff I haven't bought any since the kids had show pigs. You might have to wet the feed to keep it mixed in.

I had an eagle visit the other day, not enough landing strip for them in the yard,
hawks have been harassing to no end, lost a pullet to one Thursday,
