Thanks. The laying hens are relatively old and lazy in that area. They don't do much damage.
Now the rest of the yard not pictured is beat down pretty good.

I would love to let mine out. I have field, creek and woods (11.50+acres) but....there are also a LOT of predators. Other day I saw young red fox sneaking toward runs, Charlie (don't know if he's stupid, brave or feels invincible with fencing) ran to fence to do battle. Fox got zinged good by electric fence. Took off before I could get out the door. Hopefully he won't be back but, there are 3more that I know of.

Who is Charlie? A rooster or dog?

Had a hen die of heat... 104 this weekend. Added some shade fabric to stop afternoon sun

Sucks about the hen shubin. That's pretty d*mn hot. It ain't much better here once it gets into the 90s usually it's just as humid as it is down south.
Most birds will drink far more than you realize. I have a few pairs that will drink over a half gallon of water on the really hot and humid days.

Yea she ran out of water I guess... I filled it up in the morning and by 1pm when I went to water again she had already passed. She was in the "shaded" spot in the coop but just too much heat and not enough water.

Im glad we dont have humidity. At peak heat it was 15% this weekend. hovers around 18-20% normally. Breeze is always an instant relief and to me it feels great in shade, but wife would disagree

Charlie is a rooster.

Sorry to hear about your hen. Good idea about the shade cloth, neat job too.
Do you find that a lot of heat radiates from your metal roofing?
Its red corrugated plastic/fiber reinforced roof. It seems to work well, not that hot on underside, but really hot on the sun side. Probably a better barrier than metal.
