California semi-desert here.. They need access to shade and water. The more room to find a cool spot, the better.Thank you! This is exactly the information I'm looking for. Question! When you take the eggs from the hens, do they panic? Is there anything I can do to make that less stressful for them?
We've been handling them quite a bit. They seem to be okay with it! We took them outside for awhile to let them soak up some sun. It was great big shocker when they figured out how to get from the ground to the top of our wall. My 5 year old just about died thinking it was going to jump down and run away.
We live in Tucson, AZ and it does it scorching hot here. I think we are fairly prepared to ease them into this envirmonment. Do you know how well they can handle the eat? They seem to be a fairly lean breed. I don't know much about the hen though - does she get a big more fat than the rooster?
Thanks!
The blind leading the blind. Haha ok I'm done. Sorry. Gotta feed the birds.California semi-desert here.. They need access to shade and water. The more room to find a cool spot, the better.
Heavier birds have a harder time coping with heat. but gamefowl do ok because they are leaner.
I had to add shade cloth to sides of my coops to protect more than roof could. I had some heat related deaths.

Hens will be smaller and stay lean. They only freak out if they are Broody. Also just cause they get along since you are new and don't know any indicators to look for that their may be trouble either keep them free-range or single penned. Just cause they get along today doesn't mean it'll be ok tomorrow. They can in general handle heat good
