When hen-reared, pecking order becomes clearly evident about the time the hen stops clucking (approximately 5 weeks post-hatch). That is when hen typically weans brood. Without a hen, clear signs of pecking order can occur early as 2 weeks. Setting up of pecking order can be problematic if conditions such that chicks show "game".[/QUOT its ok that there is no pecking order though right?

Gotta pay more attention I assumed the r/h pair I posted wasn't laying. Her nest is hard to see in. Checked just to make sure she had 4 eggs. Pulled glad she didn't start setting. Gonna have an omelette for dinner

why not hatching them? Too many already?

They come out two headed and 5 legged this late in the year and walking like a duck.

The only reason I see not to hatch later into the summer is the quality of the grass, bugs etc. In more northern climates imo right now is just getting late but only because it will be cold before they're grown.

50 degrees in January down there and you guys down south are getting eggs and ready to set. Eggs I get well into march are cracking from freezing solid.

I don't remember the exact prices on any of the pelts and hides but I know I never had anything sell for over $85. We're talking about 30+ years ago, I worked offshore on a drilling rig 14 days on and 14 days off. On my off days I could trap every morning and hunt in the evening, during the off season I could condition or show roosters or go fishing. My father worked in the gulf too and our days off was staggered a week, so if he started a show I would compete. It was according to where and what Saturday it fell on to which one of us put them through a keep, some of the times we were both home on Derby day. Wish I could spin that clock back every now and then.
can't forget the elderly man with the dress shoes, slacks and button up striped dress shirt and cowboy hat drinking a Milwaukee best in a can or a pony when there was still dew on the ground roaming around with no specific place to be.
