Oak last a lot longer than pine and it's pretty cheap. an oak 2x4 from the mill is half the price of a treated 2x4 from lowes. So I wanted to save some money.May I ask why oak? Real question all's we got around here is pressure treated pine. The oak and stuff is usually high dollar specialty or cabinet wood

I have never seen an oak 2x4 in my life. I just use treated pine for the bases and regular pine for anything not touching the ground. I've never used a lumber mill though.Yeah, us back East have it pretty good with the hardwoods.
