Since I haven't participated in a good mud-slinging episode in a while, here's two links on the whole egg-storage topic that I have found interesting and believe to be accurate:
http://www.brinsea.com/Articles/Advice/PowerOff.aspx
http://www.lohmann-information.com/content/l_i_46_artikel7.pdf
Did you see the first link with the information as to temperatures crystallization starts at? I thought it matched up with your findings. What I have described is well below the range investigated in the second link. Hatch rate from last brood I actually watched was better than 80% when temperature repeatedly dropped down to just below freezing prior to onset of incubation. Another account related in following thread well before I first engaged the fact finders sdm111 and havoc from the liberal media center. Relevant info starts roughly page 3.

Well, sometimes stuff gets a whole lot more interesting when you turn it into rocket science, ya know? The entire dissertation about hatching eggs is nonsense. Pretty confident the chickens can reproduce just fine without your involvement at all. Seems like a game is being played around here to see how long and boring of a discussion can be made about an egg hatching. It’s really not rocket science.
If centra keeps a journal reading the entries could possibly be used as a new form of torture. I would personally give up a finger nail or two instead. Lol
Now you're getting into the spirit! All the temp stuff isn’t exact anyway. An egg left in a makeshift nest of bedding material may not get as cold as the outside temp. Whether or not the sun is shining on the egg throughout the day lessening the effects of a really cold night on the egg.
Haha lets take it even further. Was the wind blowing on the surface of the egg? The humidity when egg was first noticed?
