Havoc, I have some hens that will do that too and it used to bother me. I am not sure why they do it, but have not had trouble with the hatches from those hens. There must be a reason for it. Usually, I date and mark the eggs in each nest and the hens that cover the eggs at night are still laying the last 2-3 days.
I’ve noticed that two. Usually by the time I notice it couldn’t me more than the two or 3 days. Could be. I’ve got a few screwy hens that need culling
 
What may be going on with hens setting on clutch only over night late in laying cycle may have something to do with the weather. Mine more prone to do it when a front / rain event is underway.
 
Nope some are just screwy in the head. I know sometimes it could be the weather but other times I clearly see hens playing house for a few days then decide they want to be a kid again.
