What may be going on with hens setting on clutch only over night late in laying cycle may have something to do with the weather. Mine more prone to do it when a front / rain event is underway.
You know one problem I did manage to notice this year that I hadn't the past couple seasons, is when group breeding, the hens arent all going to sync up, lay their clutch and go broody at the same time. Instead they lay their eggs in their preferred nest, go broody on that clutch, meanwhile the hen next door is halfway finished laying her clutch and when that broody hen finally gets up to refuel she goes and lays on another hens eggs thinking those are hers. Mind you this doesn't happen all the time, but it does happen. Happens more with the younger hens on the yard I've noticed.
I'll see the hen on top of her eggs one day, then a couple days later I spot her on a different nest, then check the other original eggs she was brooding just to confirm what I already know, eggs went bad.

Sucks trying to stay on top of these coons so this doesn't happen. Got some more traps on the way.

I've killed 7 in the last few days 8 total so far but I can not keep up with two box traps and I can't keep staying up till 3am hunting em down every night.

It stinks, but gotta keep trying. Havocs gave me sound advice.

My dog gets there on most situations. but they try every night and some chickens have attack marks or pulled feathers.

I super-glued about 3 inches of a hen's neck skin back together.

I lost four chicks to what I think was a GHO last night. Broody hen they were under also attacked but damage appears light. Dogs appear to have intervened. All birds will be penned and game camera set out to get a visual if perp visits cockerel carcass I placed where hen was attacked. If GHO, then it is likely a young one. Raccoon might be perp, but dogs not acting right for that and I did not see damage in expected locations likely to have been around a raccoons approach to attack site.
