As soon as you take one the next takes it’s place. I try to give each their chance as king for a few days at least. It never works out that way. Occasionally you end up with a few kings at the same time. I’ve seen where I let the king go a little too long with a few who were constantly challenging the king. End up finding all kings flat on their backs with a mere peasant running the show. Opportunistic little fella.
I have laying hens so the oldest stags take control until a younger challenges him. The stakes are high and nobody quits unless forced.

Oh yeah man this little king deal helps cull the herd too. If I see a more mature stag bowing down to a less mature or smaller bird, I feel that's a sign. I make mental notes of which stags are showing those beta instincts. Too many instances of that behaviour and I'll cull.

Even if you keep one that did something you didn’t like just keep a note of it and check later to make sure. When they’re young it’s not all black and white but when they’re 8-12 months id say it is.

Ehh there has only been a couple stags that just were complete betas, and I culled them. No space for all that lol
