That is a great example of how it should look top to bottom. You should be able to see all those tail feathers from the side, not just two or three.

Supposedly, cock #2 was better than #1. Sooooooo, who knows? ! I can hardly wait for these cockerels to grow out and blossom.

Walt....... pfffttt.... He will be a push over, Beth. We can handle him with ease. I am pretty sure I won every argument we had. Ya, I think I did.

As I have said before...my mom was a RN. One of her favorite things to tell people was.."Walter will agree with everything I say, but then he just goes off and does what he wants to do". I didn't just work with all these women, I was their boss. I had over 100 women and 4 guys working for me. 20 years of that....c'mon, I can deal with women..and the guy I show with will be there and trust me he will scare you both. He is the retired curator of the vertebrate museum at UC Berkeley and let me tell you he is legend in the poultry community for being a whacko.

Getting back to Dels. really looking forward to what you guys produce next season. When you beat the Rocks, you will have really accomplished something that few could do. I'm looking forward to it.

I want to go to the Crossroads show!!! The more I hear about who and what will be there, the more I want to go!!

Walt, those ducks are awesome. I'm crossing fingers for you too, not that you need it.

Walt, can't wait to meet your curator friend. I taught, remember. NOTHING scares me.

And that is a GREAT pair of pictures, with Walt' explanation of pinched tails, Kathy - see, I KNEW you would have the best pictures!

Good way to show it. The Del male could be a bit more open though and I think it looks that way because it doesn't appear that his width carries from the back to the tail.
From shoulder to tail, the width should be about the same and carry through to the end of the tail. Does that make sense?

Do you have a pic of that barred bird? He looks like he would be a better example from the rear, but I have only seen him from the side. He just looks broad/wide.

Walt

That is a major problem- they start out so nice and broad in front, they can even have that nice bowl underline, and then they pinch off. I want that barn correct from all angles, but that last bit has me baffled- how can you breed for it if not a single bird seems to have it? Just keep taking the broadest and roundest and hope it starts to sneak off toward the rear? You can see what I mean in the hen in my avatar-

If any one has pictures to go with this it would help me understand....
It sounds like "pinch" and "tight" are two different things and not at all what we want to see in marans.

It sounds like we want a "full tail"

I thought "pinched" tail went with the "v" shape..... but further discussion seemed to contradict this....

ANY ONE want to try to clarify this for me ? ? ? ? ?

I don't have an example with a Marans, but maybe this will help.

This is a pinched tail......
