Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

So going in another direction...

I have 3 Delaware pullets and one of them, well I'm assuming it's only one, lays double yokers like they're going out of style.

I've had the odd double yoker here and there through the years but never anything like this. I'm finding around 3 a week!

Is this a trait Delaware have? I'm thinking it more of a chance type thing. I'm kind of bummed though if she isn't going to be able to produce decent hatching eggs.

I don't know if that is a Delaware trait or not. My Delawares all lay a smaller egg than I would have thought for the size of the bird. I have had breeds though that lay a fairly consistent double yolker but t hey only did it their first year of laying. If you want hatching eggs, just collect the ones that aren't double. Hopefully, next year it won't happen.

It's GREAT for breakfast but not so much for hatching! :D

Many of the heavier breeds will lay double yolk eggs when first coming into production. As long as the birds are not getting over weight this should diminish as they near their peak in production. Also, if the birds are old this is also fairly usual to have double yolk eggs. As fat within the bird increases they will being to lay more double yolk eggs. the Extra fat deposits will cause alter their hormone balance and cause multiple ovulations which is why we get double yolk eggs in the first place.

Hey all I got a pretty good updated picture on my boy hansom today he was waiting for bread scraps at supper time tonight on my back porch, so grabbed a picture.... he is still without a tail after the molt........ patiently waiting LOL he looks ridiculous without it.....

Opinions please on this bird, all 4 photos SAME bird.

She was given to my DH to give to me as a feathered out chick spring 2012 w/ info that
"This is a Delaware, you'll love the breed"

(I had sent my DH to pick up 1 duck, he came back w/ 6 birds incl. this one, I know zero else about where she came from)

She is now a point of lay pullet I guess , not laying yet

So,
1) IS this a Delaware (looks like it to me but...you be the judges)
2) IF Delaware, what quality is she, ie junk for the layer flock, or good enough should I find her a quality Delaware Roo given how rare the breed is?

From skimming over this thread it looks to me like she has the pinched together tail fault, but I'm not sure if that makes her a breeder cull ??
Thanks for taking a look and giving opinions!

Thanks Cubalaya!

I think her body shape/size is reasonable even if her feather colors aren't great, (and she does have the leg color going for her :)

Right now I'm waiting to see how well she lays,

_If her eggs are large & she lays a good amt/wk, then I might try to find her a pure Del Roo and
see what the chicks look like. If they are better than her great, if not then I'll have some extra pullets for the egg flock & some freezer camp cockerals for dinner.
Dose that sound like a fair plan?

It has been my personal experience that hens that are laying double yolkers on a regular basis will end up having more egg laying issues later on. I have seen it in several breeds and when ever it happens, LATER in the birds life there are egg laying issues.
