Oh Joletabey, you cracked me up. Gemmules is a type of asexual reproduction, and Porifera are sea sponges. Lol.

Back on track. Isaac and his brothers are so beautiful!! And cute, lol.

Kathy, those boys are precious. I can remember that stage. Aww, the sweet pilings of chicky DELAWARE love!! Lol.

I think of us a Delaware lovers as a football team, or the fans. It just seems that way

Fans need a flag to wave, what's going on with our flag? Did we pick yet? I came home today and went to put the geese away and who comes charging from 100 yards away but all the chickens out free ranging. And who's leading the way? The baby Dels! Oh my gosh, if I weren't their mother, they would scare me coming at me like that. Full force, not stopping and food on their minds.

I think we ended up with SDWD for the flag -Delgirl knows for sure, but she is busy studying asexual reproduction

. . . .I just have to get my act together and sew a few up. It's been so cold and nasty that I have been spending all my time putting outdoor clothes on and waddling around like Ralphie's brother, and then taking them off to go inside, and then putting them all back on just to go out again. Whew!

Kathy, if you only have one that is a cull, that is great - are yours showing any aggression with each other?I have one of the potential culls that is getting a little uppity with the other roos, ruffling up and giving the stink eye.

I tried to put Ultrasuede up on the edge of the brooder for pictures like I did with Buckshot, but he wouldn't pose. He just squawked at me and jumped back down into the brooder. I guess jumping distances is another Suede thing!

Rustyswoman- I bet that is something, watching them all race toward you- video time!

Oh Walkswithdog. . . . .where oh where are the pictures????

Now, Beth, you know better than that .... why would you even ask? MY angels? ha, of course they aren't aggressive!

No, actually, they are in a group of about 40, and I really have not yet seen any aggression with them. I do, however, see one of the Olive Eggers in there becoming the Alpha! The Dels are first to the door, when humans enter, that is for sure. Then, they want to play and mingle with us. I think they prefer human contact, over other poultry!

I do plan to keep all the roos until 20 weeks, just to be sure! Then, I dunno .... probably sell the culls. I do have another group of 10 coming along, so I have some back-up, if these don't make the cut! LOL My girls are really looking good, I think. I will inspect them more closely this weekend.

Beth it a wonderful feeling to watch them rush out to greet me.
I just want to turn circles and laugh when they do that.
But I have learned when I see them coming and I have to get to the coop, I have to RUN toward them and zigzag while I do it or else I only make it halfway there before they catch me and then I am stuck with babysteps until I get there.
They won't move when they are at my feet so I have to step over and around and I worry that I am stepping on someone!

Rustyswoman- HA! I can see you doing the chicken-dodge dance!!! DH has size 13 shoes, and has sworn he will NOT be responsible for any chicken dumb enough to get under his feet. I am going to keep him out of the run!

Kathy - Oh heavens, yes, I forgot, yours are angels and would NEVER think of doing anything wrong!

My big question of the day-WHERE ARE THE PICTURES, CHER????

My second big question of the day - after my little photo session yesterday, and after looking at Buckshot's stretch pose, I went out and poked at some of them. Do they go through a lanky teenage stage? I am used to horses- lots of yearlings and two year olds will be really lanky/slender for a while, so I wasn't thinking that maybe my chicks should be plumper already. They have access to chick starter 24/7 and get treats including egg at least 5 days out of the 7 -
are all of yours like mine and I just can't tell from your pictures, or do mine look skinny?

DH says I am obsessing. . . . .

Morning all!!

Beth....I'm with your DH. If they have access to food, they'll eat if they're hungry. I'm pretty sure that since the Dels grow soooo much faster than most breeds that a "lanky" stage is pretty normal. I got rid of all my roos several weeks back so I have nothing to compare to, but my girls are a bit on the "long and lean" side. Even Sasha, at 28 weeks old looks a bit "thin" to me compared to Pepper and L'il Bit. BUT, she eats like my 15 yr old son, so I guess her body is using it for something!

....and OK Cher, I'm with the rest of the group!!! WHERE ARE THE PIX!!

I need more coffee. Everyone have a great (much warmer) day

Good morning everyone!

With all this Dellie talk that's going on, it's really starting to make me itch to incubate.
hmm.png
I'm seriously considering setting some of my Delaware eggs.
ep.gif
I've also got 2 Chantecler and 2 Rosecomb Rhode Island Red hens with Prince (my Del roo), and I may even incubate those eggs as well. Those crosses should produce some really nice layer pullets for someone.
wink.png
...not to mention the interesting colors. And for those of you wondering ...it's very easy to tell which egg comes from which breed of hen. The 3 breeds (Delaware, Chantecler, and Rosecomb RIR) all lay a different color/tint/texture of egg...super easy to tell the difference.

Anyways...that's my Delaware story for today. Hope everyone has a wonderful day! I'm off to deliver a few young birds to a customer, then I'm back home to relax for a while.

Scott, that makes me feel better- I will relax! And isn't it so very nice to have warmer weather?

Shelleyb- that Chanticler cross sounds really interesting - if you do that, keep us posted. I think chantaclers are neat birds.

OH CHER??????????????????????????????????????????? We are waiting. . . .

Beth, mine go through that too.

Shelley--Another reason that you are wanting to incubate is that there are only .............63 days left until the first day of SPRING!!!!!
