you are 200% right about the little trouble makers. i had 25 chicks in my basement for probably 3 mos or so (they hatched in december leave me alone!) & they were so BAD! within the first couple weeks they were jumping out of the brooder and making little chick messes EVERYWHERE!!! and now theyre no better. its sad when the you go in the coop and then hens are what you have to watch for. they just look at me like, "YUM!" Its scary really haha....ive never had a peck hurt like a delaware peck! they are all over me when i go in there! its bad! especially when i go over to the nests to collect eggs, then its "And who do you think you are? We worked hard on those!" and thats when it gets ugly haha. i still try to think about a chicken story i read on here once. i am collecting the hens rent. but, i dont think they agree.

the roosters on the other hand are the cuddly ones haha

Cetawin, OK, I read it, and I am now a crumpled little rag on the floor, sniffing and blowing my nose.

I am also now honored more than ever that you all put up a marker for Superchick- and I just want to run home to all my kids and give them treats and make sure they are OK. That must have been such a horrible time for Cheyenne, as well as you and your DH. Thank you for sharing that story with me-

You know, I have to look at pics of Suede and look at Ultrasuede again. His eye is dark compared to the Dels, so I need to look again and see just how dark it really is. His expression is so beautiful - very warm.

OH RATS! I just looked out the window- it's snowing AGAIN!!!!

Cetawin ... That thread made me cry!

Poor little Cheyenne, what a sad time for you all.

Rainy wet here, too. Not as bad as a downpour though. Just drizzle all day long. I am so sick of the muddy yard. My runs have sand in them, and I am happy to say ... they aren't muddy! I am soooo glad we sanded them!

I did not get pictures today, as I have been so busy, along with whining about my abscessed tooth. I was lucky to just get the chores done!

I noticed, since I moved the Dels into their own pen, they are going through a mini-molt. I can't believe the changes they are going through (colorwise) the past couple weeks. I see why it is recommended to wait 5 - 6 months to see the full picture! A couple of my roos have very dark barring on their tails, and a couple have much much lighter. I am anxious to see the end result! (I'm anxious for them to hurry up and grow and lay eggs, too!) They are about 14 weeks old now.

Who are the parents of the eggs you are selling? Are they breeder quality?

They are from different places, some from a place called Texas Poultry, but they are not hatchery quality at all. I just actually called TP today to ask where they get their stock today and they said they get them from several different breeders, which explains the quality. I have some from Will Morrow from Whitmore farms in MD & some from local breeders. They have been culled a lot!! I started with about 50 & now am down to 8 breeders. I have a thread going about them if youd like to take a look. Its titled "culling delawares" and I also have a video of them on there. Theres also some more pictures on my byc page. The video is also listed on the auction. They need work just like everyones, but I dont think Im too far behind everyone else. Im happy with my progress so far, but they could always be better. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Takes alot of culling over time to get these even close to right, so I dare say most everyone's Dels could be improved, some need it more than others, of course. You just usually have a jump on that if you get your stock from a breeder who has already been working on them for quite some time. I think Will Morrow got his from some hatchery in Alabama and another one, maybe Ideal, way back (he told someone that I know) and has been working on them for years since then. And even if you could start with perfect, show quality Delawares, you'll still have to cull--it's the nature of the beast.

Hello Delaware Lovers,

The babies are 6 days old today and I am in love!!! I am really trying to "photo-document" their journey and will be starting a blog soon (I hope!!) I took some pictures of most of them today and am really trying to note any changes with them - here ya go:

This is Stripey - this chick has the darkest black color on the back of the head

This is Butterball - probably the most active and curious chick - there is gold "banding" around the left side of the neck and Butterball is the biggest chick so far

This is Spot (silly name, but that is all we can come up with now)
Similar to Stripey, but the black color is not as dark on Spot:

This is Norbit - the "runt" and most "guarded" chick, but Norbit also loves starting games of "keep away" and is always the first to run over if someone else is pecking or scratching

There is also Pearl and one with no name and I am working feverishly to get pics of them

Enjoy!!
