Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I don't see any that have Columbian markings some have alot of barring but from the looks of those guys they look to be around 3 mo. old and from what I've gathered on this thread that the Dels will still go through more changes for some time, I think that's why they say wait till around 6 mos. of age before really getting serious with the culling. I know my Dels are right at 3.5 mos old and they look as if they change in appearance, much less in size everyday, boy these guys are really putting it on and the roos are starting to get their hackles in right now.

Heres a link that shows some Columbian Rocks you can use as a comparison.

Look on feathersite under the Plymouth Rock section there's some good photos of Columbians on there too.

Rwoman : the splash is the sweet gene...I swear every splash I have or have been around is just sweet. Thor is just a big ole baby but he is turning into an awesome Roo.

Beth...yes he said that they are just one of the most mouthy, curious, tasty breeds around...everything must go in the mouth. You have not noticed that yet with yours? LOL Fattie will bite you and shake her head like a bulldog if you do not give her attention when she wants it. I have scooped her up, held her beak, said NO firmly, lightly thumped her, shot her with a spray bottle of water....nothing works. You either give in or you get bit plain and simple.

Catdaddy, thank you. See the hen in the upper left. Those hackles look like light columbian to me...? And those Columbian Rocks look just like Light Sussex. What is the difference between the two do you know?

LadyHawk, Thor is a very special Roo. I still smile when I think of the stories of him you've told. And yes, splash are just melt your heart sweet.

RWoman you should have seen him this morning.... DH opened his little coop and Cannonball shot out the door. Well DH turned to grab her and sorta lost his balance and grabbed her up a bit roughly and she screamed...Thor cam charging out the open door and rushing over but stopped, looked at DH and Cannonball and took in the scene, then Thor screamed at him as if to say "Enough! Put her down". He did not rush him, flare up or try to flog but he did rush to see who was hurting Cannonball and ready to protect her. DH smiled and told Thor that it was okay, he was not hurting her. LOL I so love that boy....both of them.

Cyn...here is the email I got from Dr. Robinson a few mins ago...

Hello LadyHawk,

Thank you for the pictures of the two roosters and I just want to say that Isaac is amazing. I have not yet seen a Delaware Rooster to match him. Should you and Bill need to take him home with you, I would say he is worth every penny you could spend on him plus the gas.

As for the Orpington rooster, I can see why you are so fond of him. While not being per standard, he is without a doubt a good looking boy. I look forward to seeing his offspring when I stop by in the morning.

Your dear friend in Georgia is very lucky to have two such fine roosters that have outstanding personalities as you have described. It is clear from viewing the pictures that your friend loves and cares for her birds as well as you do. You can always look at a bird and see how s/he has been raised, handled and treated. There are times I am fooled but I could not imagine either of those roosters being anything less than healthy boys.

As you are being so kind to let me come collect a blood sample from your Delaware pullet, I wanted to ask if you would mind if I check both Delaware and also the Orpingtons and Easter Eggers that are brooding with them. I will be returning next month to examine the ducks and birds you are taking out-of-state, I see no reason to not go ahead with the lab work on the younger ones while I am there. I also appreciate your suggestion regarding Thor and I agree. There is no need to stress him more than necessary by drawing the blood in front of him. We can move the pullets into the house and I will do the draw there. We can minimize the stress on him easier that way. If you allow me to do his draw tomorrow, that will be enough stress on them all.

It is my intention to arrive at your home around 9:00am, I will give a call should I be delayed with my 8:00am appointment. If you need to re-schedule, just give me a call and I can come by on another day or later tomorrow.

Regards,

Dr. R

The one in ques. has barring (actually I think its called stippling) see the black is broken by the white. On columbian pattern the feather is a black stripe lengthwise with white penciled lining usually.

Yeah the Columbian Rocks look like Lt. Sussex the major difference cosmeticaly, the Lt. Sussex is white footed and white skinned other than that very similar. Lt. Brahmas are also considered columbian patterned also.

There's a picture posted back on post #2626 of a columbian pattern on a Delaware.

Ahhh, thank you. I feel a great relief, honestly. I was so dissappointed that I had a bunch of Columbian Delawares... I am so glad they aren't. Now I can focus on something else!

And I didn't know that about the Columbian Rocks and Lt. Sussex. They look so much alike!

LadyHawk, that was so smart and thoughtful to make sure Thor didn't have to watch. I bet Cynthia is smiling right now. She should be.

Laney--what are you putting in the new incubator? Dels? I am so sorry about your coop. That happened to me awhile ago so thanks for the reminder. I need to get those trailer tie downs and use them on the coops.

Rusty, Tomorrow I'm setting some Delawares, some BBS Orpingtons, and some Barred Rocks from Cyn. I'm so excited. It took me a while to get the incubator set up tonight, so I'm going to let it run overnight. I got an Rcom Suro King 20 and it's a bit more complicated than I expected, especially with the instructions in translated Korean.

Now by the time I have these babies hatched, I hope to have the outside Brooder fixed! If not, they get the whole coop to themselves!!! The chickens like the goat barn better anyway!

How is everyone else doing?

That is wonderful Laney! You are going to get so much enjoyment from your chicks. By the way, how is your chick?

LadyHawk,
That is just the sweetest vet, you have there! Wow, are you lucky. Send him east! Give him a big ol hug from us all! What a great guy!

Laney ... YIPPEEEEE ! ! ! ! Oh, and so sorry about your coop! Dang weather! Spring is near ... or so I am told!

Beth, You should see these Orp babies! OMG, they are a ball of fire! I can tell that the absorbed yolk is gone now, and they are eating and drinking and running around like little heathens!

Tracey, I am happy for you! Get that bator warmed up! We're gonna have Del babies all over the place!

Camille ... Who was the egg eater? The Dels? Hope your roo is all healed up!

Jeremy, An incubator? Oh, boy, you're gonna love it! You have eggs coming?

Gountrychickengirl .... You said, "AHHHHHH............could someone pass the Delaware Anti-Mind Control drugs please???????"
lau.gif
No such thing! LOL

Germaine ... what am I hatchin' ..... actually, my Sportsman is empty, awaiting shipments of incoming eggs! But, the hatcher has the Buckeyes and Orps (and Turkens) due Friday and Saturday! I looked at your pictures. I don't see the Columbian that you thought. Isn't Columbian like more black, and no barring at all?

JamesA ... I think Cyn missed your post. I don't know what age they start laying either! Do you know, Germaine?

CatDaddy ... I think I am gonna meet up with your brother one day soon!

Cyn .... How's that hatch goin'? They should all be poppin' now!
