Way to go, CannonBall!

We are back from Asheville! Wow, we had planned to hang out in Asheville today, had brunch and the locals started whispering "well we only live 10 minutes away so it won't be too bad". After conferring with a few of the wait staff it was decided we should just head for Greensboro ASAP.

It was a good thing we did as it was NASTY in the mountains then. Slush on the roads etc. Took us 45 minutes to get just to the other side of the mountain. We expected the snow to stop before we got to Greensboro (BTW it took us until 3 to get there), but it kept up. We stopped on the other side at a place called GrandDaddy's antiqes. Wait until you folks see this picture I took for you there. You'll have to wait until tomorrow though, because I'm beat!

We started home from the Antique Mall (HUGE) at about 5pm, and by then they were predicting snow for the whole state. It took us until about 7:30 to get home. At that point we had been informed of what was waiting for us. One sick 14yo who had kept most of her important obligations. (I.E. the house was a mess, dishes not done, chores not done, but the animals were fed, and the eggs were watched). She has a fever of 101.9, and is nauseous. Now, I'm not sure if the nausea comes from being ill, or the fact that 13 or 14 Hershey bars are missing from our S'more making kits. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Also, she dealt with one of our goats kidding while we were out of town. This one was expected. Maggie gave birth to two boys, no names yet. So all in all we're pretty proud of her. Eggs are due to pip tomorrow.

Now:

Welcome MrKathy!

Incubator update...

After unpacking all the pieces and putting it all together I ran it last night from 9 PM until Midnight, taking temperature and humidity readings every fifteen minutes (over doing it a little? eh?) I have 2 thermometers: a standard mercury one and a digital one. The mercury read a constant 101 degrees every fifteen minutes and the digital started at 95 and worked it's way up to 98.4 degrees. The humidity went from 50% to 60%, finally leveling out around 11 PM at 56%.

I let it run all night and woke up this morning at 6 AM to check the stats again. Mercury was at 101, the digital at 98.4 and the humidity was at 58%.

That said... is that okay? Are those numbers correct for hatching? I was worried a little about the variance between the two thermometers but I figured if you added the two together the average would be about 100 degrees. Right?

BTW, it's a Genesis 1588.

YAYAYAYAYAYAYYAYAY! Eggs will be arriving soon!

Cetawin- what happened to Cannonball? I keep reading these posts about an injury but I didn't see any pictures or remember reading a post about her??? Congrats on your first Dellie egg!!

TACEY- that's exactly how it was here today. Stormy when I woke up this morning then it cleared off around 2 PM to beautiful blue skies. That's California for ya I guess.

It's hard to say on the thermometers. Sometimes you can have 5 in there and they all read a different temp. What I have found though, is best is to pick what you are going to go by, and stick with it. So you have 3 choices, go by the digital, go by the mercury, or go by the average...but do not wishy wash between them. The changes you'll make second guessing which one to go by will do more damage than being under or over a bit.

So, unless you have an accurate thermometer to compare them to that you trust absolutely I would go with an average of the two. Not as easy to just glance at, but more peace of mind. I've been known to do the average of 3....

Congratulations on your new incubator, and good luck with your eggs!!!! I can't wait to hear all about your hatch!

(Is it too late for you to order a spot check?)

urbanfarmboi - pics are on page 339. Somehow she cut her upper beak near her face and peeled a section up. Have no idea how it happened so she is in a dog crate in the house getting spoiled more rotten than she already is, getting treats and ointment on her beak twice per day.

Thank you Laney, Kathy and TaceyPerkins

BTW she is reallllllllly irritated being locked up away from Thor. She heard him outside today and was raising holy HELLO! Then she bit me when I went to take her out...she bit Cheyenne tonight too. she is fine once she is out for awhile but man she is cranky!
