I truly appreciate a breed that lays xlg and jumbo eggs. They not only sell well but I get a feeling of satifaction when I find them in the nestbox. I also think any bird worth its salt will forage well and not stand around the coop or feeder. I don't have Dels and one thing that puts me off is it seems to me their white would be an easy target for hawks or other predators. We have a lot of hawks here. Anyone that has Dels that forage, do you find this to be a problem compared to other good forages, like Ameraucanas or EEs?

All I can say is that I've never lost a bird to a predator, even a Delaware. We have hawks, coyote, fox, bear, raccoon, opossum and the usual cats and roaming dogs. Isaac is super-alert, so that's my only explanation. I don't think they are taken by predators more than any other chicken, from what I've seen here on BYC.

What do you mean? Is that not great winter camouflage?

funny:D i dont see where ameraucanas or easter eggers are great foragers, they are the first to roost everyday. i imagine that the delawares would be similar to barred rocks or dominiques when it comes to foraging.
