Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I have six Delawares and they are now six weeks old. Wow do they feather out quickly! So nice.

One of the "girls" has a much larger comb than the other five. What's the chance I have a rooster? Or do comb sizes vary in hens?

I know time will tell, but I'm so curious! Will try and post photos shortly.

Hen comb size can vary a good bit. Usually by 4 weeks there are enough differences to spot the boys from girls. If the legs on that one are thicker, it's comb is redder, and/or it stands a bit taller (chest up - like better posture) then it's probably a boy.

I got my first non-hatchery Delaware egg today! I saw one of the pullets vigorously inspecting the nesting boxes this morning. She was rolling around an egg in there from one of my Minorcas, but I didn't think anything of it. Today was 24 weeks and 5 days. I'm hoping her other 4 hatch mates start soon since the rest of my flock is 16 mos old and taking their sweet time through their first molt. Her brother & backup roo is the photobomber.

Also the boys seem to have more black "spotting" on their backs, at least mine do, they are from Whitmore farm. Comb color is another good tell, the boys are dark pink to reddish and girls pale pink.

There is nothing, I mean NOTHING, sweeter than a Delaware Rooster.

I have one boy that talks to me non-stop when he hear my voice. A total darling! On the nights we have returned home late, after dark, I NEVER have to worry about finding this boy. He speaks to me the minute he hears me, EVEN in the pitch dark of night.

I have another male who has always been our hug-a-bug. He is 9lbs and so gentle.

I have two other juvie males that are growing out right now. Sweeties too.

Delaware Roosters do not play nice with other roosters, but they are great with people.
I think they the smartest roosters too!
