Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I'm glad you asked that question. I was wondering the same thing?
The idea is that heavy/large fowl birds can have leg problems jumping down from and getting up to high roosts.

Also the idea of having no roosts for big birds is suggested because they can develop keel problems

Please do put in a low roost for the dels.  I lost my broadest roo two weeks ago to a broken leg.  My roost are not really high but evidently to high for this particular roo.   Since I used flock raiser, I wonder if they got enough calcium or other mineral to get their bones strong enough to withstand the jump. I did have oyster shell for them but very little was eaten.Hummm

How high? I have one that's 2ft off the coop floor, another that's 18 inches. She insists going to the top roost. She also insists on perching on my split rail fence! I also have a brahma that's far worse about jumping onto and over fences, and she's even bigger.

They should have roosts. Mine are set up @ 24" with bedding, and I have never had a problem. Somewhere between 16" and 24" should be fine. A 2" x 4" or 2" x 3" with the corners rounded off make good roosts for big birds.
