Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Any of you VCDL's getting the weather I'm getting? Snow, sleet, nasty, nasty? I took my DH to work this morning in the Blazer- 4 wheel drive, right? I'm all smug, thinking I can handle this, watching other people skid around and all - halfway up a hill on my way home out in the country, my 4 wheel drive gives out- I can't get up the hill- two nice men stopped in their trucks and tried to help me - we all decided something wasn't engaging. So I backed down the hill, into someone's yard - avoided their rather beautiful rooster who came out to see if he needed to challenge me - got permission to abandon my vehicle in their yard, and started the 5 mile walk home, clutching my purse and small bag of groceries. About 1/2 mile up the road, the county fire marshall picked me up and delivered me to my driveway. . . . .whew!!!! PEOPLE ARE SO NICE!!!!!
Anyway, I have plenty of chick food, cat food, dog food and people food, so if the electricity doesn't give out, we are set. I bought 12 of those 18 hour hand warmers to put under the Dellies if it does!
Be prepared! 4-H training in action!!!
DH, however, is going to have to beg a ride home from a buddy. . . . . .

Glad you made it home safely.

Here in Massachusetts we are getting cold, no snow or nastiness. Yesteday was 15* and today is a high of 17*. I think I would prefer the snow and sleet if it brought warmer temps. So please send it up the cost to us.

I haven't let my Del babies out in this crazy cold weather and hubby says I have to. They ate 30lbs of feed in 2 days because they are locked up in the coop and he said they should be cold weather hardy. But at 12 weeks old I'm not convinced they are ready for those kinds of temps yet.

It's pouring buckets of very cold rain and should turn to snow later on, but it's a mudslide outside. We have to go to a family thing tomorrow south of here, but maybe we should take the 4WD truck rather than the car.

Kathy, if the cold is very dry, you could let the young Dels out or at least open their door and let them venture out awhile. If it's wet, that's frostbite weather! Tom won't let out any of the birds when its raining or cold and wet with snow and yes, they do eat alot of feed that way.

Beth, so happy someone gave you a ride!!

*Waving bye bye from Oregon* Have fun Mr. Yard Full Of It

I hope the boys have a great trip with great deer to bring home!

something got one of my Delie pullets by the head yesterday. she is now in my bathroom. I left in the coop in the brooder last night beacous she was preening and talking, and I have the heat lamp out there. she was no were near as perky today, she is still talking to me a little. the wound it's self is pritty bad, the top of her head and right side of her face, her eye is still there I think. I've never had to treat a birds wounds befor. heres what has gone on so far https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=277220 maybe she will be feeling better by tomorrow morning, after being cozy, rested, and getting some gateoraid.

that sweet heart of a Delie just snuged up to me when I picked her up last. it my smaller, darker girl. I feel better about having her inside beacous she is so trusting, not meny of the chicken I've had found people to be comforting. I'm going to check on her now

Kathy - Yup, two of the eggs are Java's. I'm so excited. They are either black or white. I really wanted mottled, but I just want Java's. Who knows what kind of surprise I'll get out of the two blue green ones.

Yardy - Have fun! I hope your 14 yo bags a nice big buck...I know how the ego can be at that age and he really needs to beat his little bro.

Jolet - I was in a similar situation before when I lived in MA. I was coming home from work and my tiny little stick shift car broke down about 10 miles from home. It was about 30 degrees out, sleeting. I was on a hill in a lane of traffic and it was getting dark. I had a light coat (into the car off to work, into work, no need for coat right?) and was wearing a mini skirt and high heels.

This nice couple pulled up and I had a real dilemma. I remember it was around Christmas now too because they had gifts in the car. I said in my head "I swore I would never get in the car with strangers, but I also swore I would never freeze to death too" This was long before cell phones btw. OH to mention the car was supposed to be traded in the next day for my first new car? I ended up having it towed to the dealership.

Crazy lady, I am so sorry about your sweet pullet- Is the skin torn away? Is she still bleeding? I hope you get good advice from somewhere - keep us posted- here's praying she makes it!!!!!

Cynthia - 4WD!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!!! Don't take any risks -

Cetawin, be careful of the ice- that's worse than deep snow anyday-

Laney- you were in a mini and heels? Oh dear- at least I had on sweats and Sorrels!

PCPup and everyone, take care of yourselves in this nasty cold!!! I hope Scott and his boys are safe-

Wow...how forunate so many folks were helpful!

It started snowing here in Mt Airy about 1:00pm. DH had to load our daily shipments in the 4WD Jeep and take them to the UPS driver at another stop up the road. The driver was afraid he wouldn't make it down the hill (& back up) to get here. Anyone with 4WD is slippin' n' slidin' already.

We are to get plenty more overnight and tomorrow morning. We have lots of feed for the chickens, chicks, pigs and cows. DH threw hay to the pigs and cows as well. I'm filling water jugs just in case the power would go out. We have the wood cookstove to keep us warm if the power fails (oil heat).

Crazy_lady - so sorry to hear about your Dellie. Hope she heals well.
