Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Rustyswoman,
The chicks I had with a sort of tipped comb have straightened out now, except for the back part of one roo, but I keep thinking it will, since everyone else's has- they are 8 weeks. How old are yours with the tilted comb?

I think you hen is lovely!

Thanks Beth, I wish they would but they are about 8 and 1/2 weeks now and starting to get pink. What about the feet everybody? Is that what they mean by green?

Germaine, they look sort of dusky yellow, which does appear greenish in certain lights. That's common and you'd cull for it, but IMO, not before you get your flock to the point where most of the really important traits are where you'd want them to be.

As far as the curved combs, I'd guess their sire has a curved comb, too. I've never seen that in the Dels I have here. So, yeah, I'd say it's genetic if several are like that.

Shelley, yours and mine came out of the same stock. Janet said there may have been a different pullet or two, but they were the same roosters as mine came from. I'm pretty sure that Isaac was sired by George because it shows. Wonder if Fred got any action at all in that group, LOL?

So, Shelley's Prince is Isaac's brother (or half brother), huh.... Yeah, I see the family resemblance !

Both Prince and Isaac are George's boys ... Hmmm, that George must be a looker! Any pictures of George? I know my kids would love to have a photo of their grandpa for their family album!

Just a question to those of you who seem a little more experienced- how successful (or easy, I don't know if that's the right word?) are Delaware hatches when incubated? This spring will hopefully be my first time hatching chicks (if I'm lucky enough to snag a few from someone here on the thread) and I've heard that the outcome varies with different breeds.

I know that shipping, fertility and a number of other things can effect the eggs, just wanted to get a general opinion. I'd love to have 100% of course.

rustyswoman ... here is my 2 cents worth for whatever help it may provide.

yellow as Cyn said would be a cull characteristic however, I would wait and see who end up with what at full grown and after their first real molt. That tail could come back with beautiful black or the comb straighten out over time etc etc.

Personally, I believe in given more time to decide, especially as I watched the changes that occured with Cyn's after their first molt...they just keep changing for so long before they settle into what they will actually be.

I don't think there is any difference in Delaware eggs, when hatching ... compared to the others I have hatched. I just love hatching! It's like makin' your own babies! LOL

Welcome to the Del world; where the Delawares practice mind control over their human owners!
