Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Was he really that mean? I keep watching my Roos (I have all of them in one pen) and not one of them ever is aggresive to me. And they are all crowing. Of course I am the crazy red head who brings them food and tucks them into bed when they are too stupid to go in by themselves after dark.

Jake started by biting my shoes when I'd go into their coop. Then he flogged my husband one day. One day when Tom had gone into their coop for something, I started hearing thumps and yelling and all sorts of commotion. As I was running down the steps to go see what the ruckus was about, Tom came out of the coop with Jake under one arm. Said he had flown off the roost and attacked him when he was filling the feeder. I told him to throw him into the then-empty broody pen and we'd process him in the morning. Cher was already set to come get him before this happened and I told her I'd give her one free rooster from the next hatch to make up for it, that I didn't think she wanted to propagate that temperament. And that was the end of Jake.

I am so so thankful I have not had a nasty roo yet. I am sure the day will come.

Joletabey...I had the babies (yeah right) in the house for a bit...Cannonball got her loves and attention and then just wanted to get down and run around looking into the boxes I am going through. Fattie wanted to try to eat the embroidered pattern on my top...but Thor...ah he was in the mood for loves.

Cyn...what do you think about his comb?

Rustyswoman, thank you - he was my big ol' sumo wrestler baby.

Cetawin, Thor is beautiful and I like his comb- it looks good- am I counting 5 points? His coloring is so lovely-

I agree, you can tell by Jake's eye that he was a nasty one- let's all hope none of ours take after him!

Ike and all except Kira are completely unrelated to Jake, so I'm not very worried. And though temperament is a heritable trait, it is also an individual thing. Thor's comb looks like a nice 5 pointer. It's better than his dad's, IMO.

Does that little raised 'point' in the very back count or is that just the end of the comb? I have been counting as a 6th point. Thor may have a good one but his Daddy's is just so big and awesome.

And tell me this... his wattles are big already but the red flappy part behind them near the ear lobe...what is that? Part of the wattles or an actual ear lobe. Thor loves have them rubbed too and I was wondering. I have all EE roos and they have none of this stuff. hahahahaha

From the angle, he looks to have five points. Small ones on the front count, but the back blade does not. Some are hard to figure. Maybe we need a poultry judge to tell us. That elongated flappy thing is his earlobe. Zane loves his earlobes rubbed.

Cetawin-Thor is beautiful...what a nice fella.

I finally got a chance to snap some new pics of Prince with a couple of his ladies. They're all 8 months old now. Everyone was outside today enjoying the warm sunshine. But it seems that the moment they see me, Prince sends the signal..."here comes the red head with all the goodies
jumpy.gif
...GET HER! " It's really hard to even walk around with them underfoot...and Prince is such a sweet guy that he usually won't stay far enough away from me for me to get any pics of him. With the help of my 4 year old son, I did manage to get a few...he kept everyone occupied with treats while I backed away and snapped the pics.

HighSpringsChix,
Thanks for sharing your pictures with us! How many Delawares do you have? Are yours super friendly, like Isaac's offsprings are? I really like that about them!

Shelley ... You are a redhead, too? Oh my gosh ... you, Germaine, me (well, now I'm grey!), and who else? LOL So, your Dels are 8 months old ... I can hardly wait! I love your pictures! Is your snow melting? It is a muddy mess here! It got up to 60 today.

Cetawin, I love your house chickens! LOL It looks like Thor is just part of the family, enjoying his individual attention!

Cyn, Jake was a nice looking Del, wasn't he! Ohhh, but look at his eye ... he looks like he was thinking something mean.

Beth, So sorry you have had such a crappy week. Hope it is on the upswing now. It is awful to lose a pet, for sure.

I have been outside most of the day. Worked on the new brooder, out in the boat barn. This is where my breeder pens will be (and the brooder). It is 5' x 8' so I can divide it into smaller areas, if I need to. I have decide that 2 weeks inside (the garage) is long enough, from now on! These guys (Christmas hatch) will be moving out next weekend!

You should see those big ol' Halloween hatch chicks ... They are really showing growth this past week. I need to get the pop door made for their area, so I can get them outside. It was so muddy today, I really didn't want any of them out. Though, the layers pen was allowed to free range in the timber. The ones that went out stayed very close to the coop, as they are not yet used to it. They moved into their present coop when it was so cold. Most of them stayed inside the run.
