Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Sounds wonderful! You saw that picture of Meg's chick, Polly .... isn't she the prettiest thing! I really like her! You know, I will hatch anything you send!
Our packages may pass each other in the mail. I may not get it out until Wednesday though, because I have a conference to attend on Tuesday.

Chickinlickin ( did I spell that right?) Welcome to the thread! Your girls have that nice chunky look , and Della looks really nice, I think. Nice hackle color, nicer comb and good wing carriage. Gosh, get a nice roo and go for it!

Hi All- Most of you are probably gone for the night, but I just wanted to tell everyone I set the eggs today. So we are officially on our way. I am borrowing a friends Lyon incubator. Does any one have one of these? I want to know if there is anything different then any other incubator. It seems to fluctuate alot. Talk to you all tomorrow.~ Tacey

Good Morning -

Thanks for all the encouragement everybody.

It is hard for me to get a handle on how chunky they look....compared to my other fatties, these don't seem so big.

I would really love to get in to breeding and hatching, but I need to increase my housing situation some and probably learning a little about it would help, too. Also, there are many breeds that interest me, so the one I start off breeding may have something to do with the availability of good stock and the availability of a mentor. If I can find somebody somewhat local that is willing to show me the ropes, that would be the ideal situation... I'm in rural nw Ohio, if anybody is out there......if not, I know that I can depend on you all to help me along.

Kathy, I packed up your box already. You have a baker's dozen Dels (13, one extra from Gracie), 9 BBS Orps and 3 of Meg's. Will go out Tuesday a.m. If I can get to the coops tomorrow, I'm going to treat Ike's comb and wattles and try to get some of the peeling scabs off and maybe clip the girls' beaks, but I won't put him back in with them until they can get outside and run around. Don't want him trapped in there with maneating hussies!

Great Cyn! You are too kind!

I was gonna post a picture of quilting in progress ... but decided to wait and surprise you!

You be careful out in that snow! I am so ready for spring to be here! My chickens did go outside today, but only for 1/2 the day. The wind picked up and we got some flurries, and they went back inside. I just hate when they aren't out and about.

Hope the treatment on Ike works, and the girls behave themselves!

Well I finally picked up my Mottled Java's today. Ten of them, straight run, mixed ages between 2 and 3 weeks. So, while I was doing the 4hr round trip run to SandS Poultry on the NC Coast my husband was working on the outdoor brooder that got blasted in the windstorm. We had it turned right side up and shored up yesterday, but had to get the roof on top.

It took him until almost dark to get that done. So the chickies get one more night in my Master Bath. All twelve of them (White Java and Delaware) in the Rabbit Cage Brooder. DH came in and said he thought they were overheated because the Mottled Java's were panting. I informed him that he was incorrect, that it was simply because the White Java and the Delaware would not let them near the food or Water. Keep in mind the Delaware is the same age as many of these chicks.

To appease DH I went to the kitchen to get the infrared thermometer. The cage was running from 80* at the food end to 92* at the opposite end where most of the birds were cuddled. It was a fine range for a cage holding 2-5 week birds. This is where the fun starts. The thermometer has a laser on it to show you exactly what spot you are measuring. All of the chickens were interested in the red dot when it was right in front of them, but only SawsAll the Delaware HEN would chase it. And did she chase it...all around the cage. She didn't care who she stepped on, shoved, or jumped...she was going to get that dot. Once my husband accidentally had it on the back of the white Java and SawsAll even tried to peck it there!

It was the funniest thing. All these chicks laying down and ONE just running around stepping on them, shoving them, jumping them to get the dot.

Long live the Delaware. The first to get the worm!

Laney
(SawsAll definitely has HEN feathers growing in her little tail!!)
