Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Jeremy, my little dwarf had a slipping tendon problem early on - I tried the recommended leg stretches, etc. It did develop curled toes, but that was later on, I think. If the dime is too heavy, you can use a heavy bandaid pad and bandaid the foot, from what I understand. Or something like that- if you do a search on here, there are pictures of what people have done.
Quasimodo looks GREAT. You have a bunch of sweet looking babies!

I hope Cetawin and family are sleeping in and recovering in warmth and safety and that good feeling you have when you get home. What a horrible trip!!! My DH has been muttering about moving to Tennessee - Cetawin's saga should put the quienus on that!

Laney- that little roo is a looker! Wow- and your Javas are pretty- that is another breed I know nothing about, but the people who have them seem to love them. And Sawsall looks fantastic- I hope she turns out to be a beauty and a great producer-she has a lot of tail black! Do you use those hen aprons? Biden is such a cool guy-

Crazylady- I hope the big T doesn't turn mean on you - I know I am watching my two like a hawk- Luke is definitely head roo, but Buckshot is starting to pull at the hens feathers on their backs- I think he is getting the urge, but doesn't quite know what to do. Ultrasuede is taking over food orders. If there isn't enough food in the feeder to suit him, he stands by it and crows till I fill it to the top. . . . .

Kathy- I bet you have had the best time - everyone says grandchildren are fun- maybe one of these days my stepsons will get on the ball.....

Cynthia, Scott, Tim, everyone else, good morning!!!!

Morning all! Hope everyone had a GREAT Easter Sunday! I know we did.....church service was wonderful and the 2 meal later in the day with family were super.

Cyn - any news on Ladyhawk??? Sure hope she is ok and done with that horrible drive.

My recent hatch is over. Came home from my parent's Saturday night and moved everyone to the brooder. Hatched 21 of 24 I set on Day 18. Of my BBS rocks I got 7 blue and 7 black (no splashes this time) and I hatched 7 of the 8 SQ Barred Rocks that made it to day 18. Had a funny thing happen, we had put all the chicks in the brooder when we got home Sat night. Jennifer and I were reading before bed that night and I kept hearing "cheep, cheep,cheep"...I ignored it as I really just thought I was hearing things. Then, Jennifer said, "do you hear that?".....I went upstairs and at 12 hours into Day 22 a little BR chick had hatched. Guess it just goes to show that we need to be a little patient sometimes!!

So anyway, one side of my brooder is fully again. I'm hoping to sell all of the black rock chicks and I am going to keep the blue and barred pullets. I have a "replacement" rooster for Shadow (the big mean blue one) thats about 8 weeks old now out in the grow up pen.

Hope everyone has a great day!

Scott

Good Morning Delaware lovers!

Great hatch, Scott! Do you hatch them in the Sportsman? I always have so many differing due dates in there, so I hatch in the HovaBator. However, I am considering getting one of those RCom20 digital incubators to hatch in, or possibly the new 2010 model the RCom50.

Jeremy, Good luck with those Delawares. I love your pictures!

My grandson left to go home with his parents this morning. He just blabbed on and on about his chicken, "Della." He has allowed me to keep her for him, and will come visit her on Memorial weekend!

My sportsman has a place for a hatching tray at the bottom. I put all my eggs in egg ctns (my hatch rate has improved since I started doing this) along the side walls. I put 1 of the wicking pads into the water container and it seems to get my humidity up to around 70%. When I spoke to the GQF people about hatching in the Sportsman (I was concerned about my other eggs in there too), he told me that the short period of time that the humidity was raised would not hurt them....and, so far so good. That 100% hatch still alludes me, but I'm gonna get there sooner or later!!

Did you see my thread on my 100% hatch? Here is how I did it!
https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=319841&p=1

See, I have eggs in the Sportsman all the time, with differing dates. So the humidity would be high for the whole time on some of them. I dunno .... I wish they had it fixed where there was a seperate hatching tray, that wouldn't affect the others. I think I will just stick to using a table top incubator as a hatcher.

No word from Ladyhawk! Now, I'm worried. Doesn't she know we all worry! Kids these days, sheesh! If she hasn't called by late today, I'll call her cell #. I was waiting for my free unlimited long distance to kick in, but even if it's not turned on, may have to call her anyway.

Me, too - maybe she is waiting for evening rates? Maybe she put her cell charger down somewhere and it's buried in all the unpacking?

Everything is OK and everyone lived through it all!

Scott, that is a great hatch- you guys are all such pros at this! Scott, why don't you want your black rocks? Wouldn't they produce blue?

This is some info on the blue genetic.
Blue is a diluting gene for black. So, 50% of your Blue will hatch blue, and 25% will be black. The last 25% will be splash, having received two diluting genes.

If you breed any of the following ways this is what you'll get:
Blue x Blue = 50% blue 25% black 25% splash
Blue x Black = 50% blue 50% black
Blue x splash = 50% blue 50% splash
Black x black = 100% black
Splash x splash = 100% splash
Black x splash =100% Blue

I already have a couple of black girls and I am going to keep one or two of them. I really, really like the look of the blues and I am planning to put this splash rooster in there with the BBS, Barred girls. Will get ONLY blue and splash from him!! I will also be getting rid of the current BR girls I have and replacing them with the SQ Barreds I just hatched in an attempt to involve leg color and lacing in my blues.
