Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

We culled the little chick with the serious feet problems yesterday.

He was refusing to eat and drink, I tried to do both by hand with no luck. You could tell that he wasn't getting the same amount of nutrients/nourishment that the other chicks are, he was already almost half thier size and was not feathering out like his hatchmates at all. Maybe his size was another early sign of dwarfism? Either way the little chick is at peace now, we buried him out back under the roses. I'm still so upset that I had to cull him, now I'm down to 5 Dels. The other chick with some feet problems seems to be doing okay, he is eating and drinking and running with the others. I took the dimes out from under his feet and replaced it with cardstock. He seems to be getting around easier now that he has a more stable surface to support his wieght.

zephyrcreek, thos are some adorable babies. Delaware chicks have got to be the greatest! I'll try to get some new pictures up to show how much my Del babies are growing.

YAY BETH ! ! ! Good for you! Just think of how healthy the meat you ate was! It was not that store bought junk that is grown in a warehouse and eats medicated feed day in and day out! That crap we eat from the store is NOT good meat! I am all about having a pen full of meaties. I would like to be more self sufficient with meat and gardening. I am pretty good at going green in other areas, like salvaging lumber goods.

Hooray for Beth!

Food that you raise/grow yourself has so much more meaning than anything you can buy in a grocery store. We raise all of our own poultry now (Yes all those extra Del roo's will make it into my freezer) and purchase all of our pork and beef from local farmers. It does taste better, and it is healthier for us. I am so glad that my children are growing up learning where their food REALLY comes from.

One of my Java roos decided to act up today. He was immediately renamed DINNER. He was my #2 roo, but if he cannot be sweet in the pasture than he can be tasty on my dinner plate.

Poo! I was feeling so good about eating that Del, and then I came home from church tonight and found Buckshot dead under the coop. I went out to lock the kids up and saw he was not in the coop- looked around and there he was. He looked like he was asleep, with his head tucked under his wing, and his feet tucked under him, no blood, no messed up feathers,so I know Luke didn't murder him or anything. He seemed normal all day- what could I have missed? I have thought lately that his eyesight wasn't good - and he was slower than the others, last to do anything, etc., but I didn't think he was sick....he ate treats and would follow me around.. ..
I did post over on the diseases, don't mean to cross post, but he was my SWEET Del roo, and I am going to miss him. Do you think I am doing something wrong? Is there something I should be observing that I am not??

Oh, Beth, I am so so sorry for your loss.

Honey, things just happen sometimes. Maybe you were right, that he had vision problems, and maybe that led to something else. Who knows.... NO, do not blame yourself! You are doing everything right! Don't second guess or question yourself. Things like this just happen.

I am tearful for you, and so sorry.
