Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Cynthia, I keep forgetting to tell you how absolutely handsome my Roos are. They were slow to show it at first, but I think they are gorgeous.

If this wind ever stop blowing I will get some pics and show you your Grandbabies! The girls are beautiful too, still need to get their "womanly figure" LOL

That seems to come around 7-8 months with the other ones. One of these days if I can ever decide on a Roo I will hatch myself out some Del babies. I just can't decide who the Daddy should be. Gorgeous as they are, they still will never be Isaac.

rwoman . there will never be another Isaac for sure. My DH still asks me "So, are the women trying to eat Isaac? Can we go get him? Huh can we?" He adores that boy...Isaac and Cannonball would be spoiled absolutely rotten by him. Wait, she already is.

funny you mention meat birds...I would only buy the cornish because killing them would be merciful...they would die horrible if not processed. So I could not attach myself to them but man these Orp boys, Dellie girls, cochin girls and my solo SLW...they have my heart strings and know it!

Your method for me, would be scarey. I would be afraid I would mess up and cause the bird to suffer and I cannot handle that thought. DH gets so upset at me when we go bowhunting because I have let beautiful deer walk on by because I did not see or have "the kill shot"...I just would not take a shot that did not kill immediately. I hate having to take a second shot because a deer jumped or turned at the last second...so now I just do not shoot if the kill is not there. *sigh* a hunter with a heart...not always a good thing huh?

BTW you all have not told me today how beautimus my new babies are? What's up with that? I need to hear bragging on them daily....so get on with it, let's hear it

gorgeous aren't they? the most beautiful Meg n Suede baby EVER....

I am terrible! I can't belive I forgot to tell you.... They are so beautimus that it hurts my eyes to look at them Lady Hawk. They really are.

And if you ever need to send a bird off to "the better place" don't be afraid of this method. Tried and true and with your muscles.... don't ever worry. Quick, sharp, and it is done. Really very easy and the best way I have ever tried. Even the DH was surprised.

Cetawin, those babies are so drop dead beautiful that I fell over in a faint and just recovered now.

WHEW!!!!!

Jeremy, forgot to tell you - Cher sells hers as a cross so no one gets confused and tries to use them in a breeding program. I tried advertising mine both ways- I think, my opinion, whatever you do, make it clear they should not be used for breeding Delawares.

Kathy, did you get any of that horrible, deadly weather? Did it affect you at all?

Speaking of Delawares, mine are a mess. What messy, dirty, BEIGE children I have. They have dug holes to China under the coop, and run out in the light rain and then orgy in those pits. Disgusting. I am tempted to invite Cheyenne and her Lavender shampoo for a little visit.

Doesn't that just beat all when they do that? I love to watch them but sometimes when they catch me off guard I think it is dead the way they just lay there all sprawled out in the dirt. But then by some "majic" they get clean again!

Here is what I have so far. And a crazy mom that the dellies are running all over the penand she is trying to catch up with.

Even though she has others pipping in the nest.

In the mean time I ran around chasing dellies and rocks etc and put them back in the nest and mom went back for the time being. Whew!!!!!! Gloria Jean I checked at dark and they are all in the nest. Now if she will stay there till the others hatch.!!!!!

So yesterday my BBS Orpington from Tori, Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain, hatched. I left home just as it finished zipping out of the egg. It was cheeping in the incubator as I went out to a book signing with a friend, that was around 5:30. I didn't get home yesterday evening until around 10. The little chick had started to dry out and yes- it was blue! I was SO happy! Then, around 11:30 when I laid down to go to bed I went and checked on it before I turned in for the night.

It was dead!
hit.gif
I don't know how or why but it was curled up in the corner of the incubator not moving, I tapped on the plastic of the incubator and clicked the flashlight on and off at it, at first I just thought it was sleeping. Then I noticed it wasn't breathing and I freaked out. I opened the incubator and grabbed it, rigamortis had already started to set in and the little chick was stiff.

Why?

Does anybody have any idea of what might have caused it to die? Also, I took the Del egg that went in to lockdown with it out of the incubator this evening. It hadn't even pipped and today is day 22. That leaves me with no chicks and a 0% hatch rate. Or would it be 1%, because one chick did hatch. But it died.

Maybe Orps just weren't in the cards for me?

I'm so sorry, Jeremy! I hate not knowing what happened, but you just never know if there was something internally wrong. Seems so sad, though, to come all that way not to even make it out of the bator.
sad.png
I wish Suede was mating Dusty on a regular basis. I'd send you some Orps, but with mostly only Smoky fertile, it wouldn't do much good.

Thanks Cyn. I figured it had to have been something internal. Maybe it just wasn't suppose to make it, or even hatch? It was so cute too!

I wish I could of had a Suede baby, one of the eggs started to develop when I tried incubating before but it just didn't make it either.

If I don't give up on Orps I think next year I may just splurge and order some from Bamachicken. If they'll ship chicks maybe I'll pay for that. Or if Kathy had chicks next spring that she could ship me... (hint, hint) then I wouldn't have to worry about incubating at all. At this point I don't want to have to incubate ever again. My last batch of chicks is due out June 1st and after that I'm calling it quits for the year.
