Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

My coop roofs both leaked in the pounding thunderstorms last night. The main coop roof hasn't leaked in the entire five years since construction. I think it's where the original and the addition come together. So, we have roof repair to do and hope we can get it fixed properly. It's starting out over 70 degrees, foggy and muggy.

I've read some discussion on the rooster to pullet ration. I got 13 chicks from Sandhill last May and ended up with 2 pullets. Something wrong with them numbers!!!!!!! I did go over to OK and got 5 pullets from Bill Braden so I have a few more. I took all Bil had. He sure is a nice guy and his birds really look nice. Wish I could post some pictures but I don't know how yet.

Cynthia- that must have been some storm- we got clouds, heard lots of rumbling in the distance, but I don't think we got anything- hope you can get that roof fixed before it gets too hot- it is so freaking humid! Did it get to your feed or anything? Did you have mad, wet hens?

Har- posting pics here isn't hard, just lots of steps. Are they on your computer yet? I THINK I could walk you through posting them here if you want. I would love to see those Braden girls. And that was very odd you only got 2 pullets out of the Sandhill bunch, but I think Kathyinmo had an odd hatch like that, where she had mostly roos.

Morning all....

We did the "lake thing" this weekend and had a neighbor friend look after the chooks and the dog (she is very capable and we trust her totally). Unfortunately, we did lose 2 to the heat this weekend....1 Col Rock Rooster and 1 CR pullet (one of the girls who was beginning to lay, uuuggghhhh). Fortunately everyone else is good. Still fighting with my broodies.....they just won't stop. I think I'm putting some bricks in the nest boxes today to see if that will keep them off it!

Cyn, sorry about your leaks....be careful as I just checked the weather and it looks like you will be getting another T'storm here within an hour or so. No rain here....yard is like a dust bowl.

Stay cool!!

Scott sorry about your Rocks. I had one inside yesterday that was going down in this heat. It is horrible.

We are expecting Tstorms here today too and it is already humid and muggy outside.

On the Cannonball Note: she went back out to the coop last night after getting her hair bleached with peroxide and new ointment applied to her wound. As soon as the wound is healed up a bit more, I will give her entire self a bath. That girl has done nothing but roll around dirt!

On the incubation note - Day 20 and none of them are doing anything. I peeped at them and heard a tiny peep in reply...they are just waiting to stall my discomfort.

I was a little worried about my girls in this heat....went out to bring in the "breeder quality" cochins who are huge and fluffy and must be miserable....found them in the shade of a tree...each had dug a little hole and was laying in the nice cool ground a few inches down, shaded by the tree. Barely panting.....genius......gave everyone fresh nice cold water (the rooster pen has the least shade and was very appreciative of this) and fresh food and came back in. Of course, the bunnies I had in my nice air conditioned house fared worse....found one dead last night. She was fine a few hours prior, so no idea what happened

I'm ready for winter.

Also, I had babies hatching under a broody yesterday...2 days early. Due late Tuesday and 1 had hatched yesterday afternoon. Its so hot that the baby is out from underneath the momma panting.....the mom is standing in the nest letting the eggs air out...hoping for more babies

It was the little black lionhead I got at the swap.....she has been in my 65 degree air conditioned house ever since....somebody said maybe there was internal damage from the heat the day I got her. She was in such bad shape when I got her, really struggling from the heat....but seemed to bounce back by the next day. The other girl is perfectly fine. So sad

They were going to be house bunnies as I think its too hot outside for them around here.....had a big giant bunny hutch in the works....now I have to find a new little friend for the gray bunny (Stella).
