I had 3 Dels go broody this spring.

the one in the photo is the second one who went broody. She sat for 6 weeks. She kept breaking the eggs and contaminating the rest with bacteria so her first 2 settings did not hatch. I kept giving her new eggs when I knew she had nothing viable to hatch, and that is why she sat for 6 weeks. She was determined and made a great mother! All 3 of my Del broodies were great mothers and did a great job. Now that I think of it, one of my girls sat for 15 days and quit but she was one of my girls who went broody later, hatched out her eggs and raised them up. When she quit at day 15, I had an other broody on hand that hatched out the eggs for me. They were raised by an Orpington. I also had a hatchery stock RIR that went broody and hatched and raised Del chciks for me. She got upset when I took the babies away and put her back with the rest of the flock. She raised those chicks for 4 weeks and was also a great Mom.

Kathyin mo, I don't know much about Jessie McD's birds. I have never seen pics of his stock but I do know he has ebay auctions every once in a while.

Ca, love the baby pic. There is nothing cutter than a baby Del, even if they came from a hatchery

CA, that little one has the Dellie mind control down pat! What a face!

Kathy, I know, this chicken bathing thing - I dunno, I dunno. But we have to get them out there! Good work, Cindi, on getting Will Morrow. We should have two new members from the Ohio show, too. I met the woman who showed her rooster, gave her the info, and she passed it on to the other breeder showing.

my other post had one response and got lost in a baby discussion ( I can understand why with all that cuteness) but I am trying to determine gender and I have not seen an egg for sure or a cock a doodle doo. Should be around 20 weeks old or so. We have had said bird a week. Beautiful but does not like to be held like other birds I got from same farm do. Picks on other birds too.
I dont see obvious saddle feathers... so not sure. Please help me with sex. Not sure if pure delaware or hatchery or mutt... any help is appreciated.

kristip...looks like a hen because of no pointy saddle and hackle feathers, but then it looks rooish too....I'm gonna go with hen though, as the angle and length of the tail is the only indicator. The comb and wattles aren't quite large enough for a male of that age. I'm also thinking a mix, because of the little bit of red in the wing, and a slight hint of off coloring in the hackles, but it could also be NH red bleeding through. It also is pretty smutty. The solid feathers in the tail could be either female Delaware, or indication of the cross breeding. Either way at 20 weeks, I'm thinking that's a pullet.
