Horizon, what kind of "dust" is in your dusting box?

BTW, I am so excited to hear that my Mcmurray mutts have been validated! LOL! But I only got two and they are so different. One is little, the other big. One is smutty and the little one is not! Oh well, I love them since they are my first Dels! And I am going to make them a playground just like yours, Horizon!

Can someone take a look at these and tell what you think? They're about 8 months old. All I have is these 2 Roos I bought from a breeder. I have Del eggs in the bator now for next season.

This one is just a little smaller than the other and docile.

Robnms,
Did you buy them as chicks? If they were sold to you as Delawares, then someone/someplace has had a great infusion of Columbian something or others in the background of their stock. Sometimes even breeder stock will hatch out the Columbian pattern from good Dels, I had a hatch with two roos that looked like that too. It is something we are trying to eradicate in the breed, and mine ended up in the freezer. I am really sorry, but your birds would not be good breeding stock. If you like them as roosters, do keep them, or process them, or find them good homes. But if you want to breed Delawares, then it would be best not to use them.

Robnms, I have to agree that your birds are either a cross or very incorectly marked Delawares. They difinately have the wrong markings for a Delaware, and Joletabey is not alone when she says we are trying to get rid of those genes from the Delaware breed. Here are a couple of pics of 2 roos that I culled for various reasons but you can see the barring on them that a Delaware male should have. I too have seen Delaware males pop up with almost solid color and those guys need to be removed from any breeding program to remove the genes that are throwing that solid color where the bird should be barred.

It is like 99% sand from the beach that I thoroughly dried out prior to its use. I mixed a bit of DE into it. I plan on sifting some ash from the woodburning stove to it in the near future; soon.
