Cammy,

You've picked a TERRIFIC breed, The Delaware!!
love.gif
They are terrific birds, with a infectiously sweet and curious personality to boot!!

There are several breeders on this thread, and theres a link in my sigline, to also help get you started

They're just over six weeks old. It's been pretty warm, due to the constant rain. Definitely not like it was three(ish) weeks ago, that's for sure. We got freezing temps and a touch of snow on the coast here: rare, especially for November!...

Yeah; I'm bummed. But hey; I ordered more than my original intent AND more than I expected made it this far already. I try to look on the bright side

Aw nuts David!

Sorry to hear that you lost one.

A point of order on
I hope it would have grown up to be a nasty roo

Young man! I'll have you know, there is no such thing as a nasty Delaware roo!!

They're all just as sweet as the day is long. Provided of course that you raise them to be that way!
old.gif
Treat them with love and kindness and nine times out of ten, you'll have a sweetie pie on your hands. Yes! This is the voice of experience talking. I have four boys total. Each is loving, gentle and sweet, both to the girls and towards me. A bunch of "Mama's Boys" !

So, no more disparaging remarks about "nasty roo's" if you don't mind!

My eldest son thought the 16week old Delaware roos "acted like juniors in high school. Not quite top dog and pushing all the time"

-25F temp without wind chill this morning. 2 feet of snow. Coop room has 25F. Still worried about humidity in there. Delawares running around like there is no issue at all, laying eggs, etc.

Should have installed poop boards.

Your son is right, that's for sure!

Really really cold there .... BRrrrrrr! I have 40 here, and the coops are staying nice and warm so far. I agree with you, it is the darn humidity that causes the problems.

Hello Cammy,
welcome-byc.gif
and the Delaware thread! You've found one of the better sources for information and advice in the care and keeping of not just Delaware chickens, but all breeds as well.

Delawares are an awesome breed! Just ask anyone here!

We'll regale you for days on end with stories and pictures of our beloved flocks.

But be forewarned.

There is a little thing we call "Delaware Mind Control". Whatever you do, DO NOT look a Delaware chick in the eyes! It will be all over for you in an instant!
gig.gif
They latch on to your mind and you'll soon find yourself doing all sorts of strange things. Like building bigger and better coops! And going to shows in search of that perfect hen or rooster to help improve your breeding program. And buying every newfangled treat you can lay your hands on, just to appease the almighty Delaware!!!

Is it worth it? Oh yeah!! It's worth it!! Every cent and every second! It's WORTH IT!!!

And if you have any questions, this is a great place to get a lot of them answered! Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

Oh I already know about this mind control. I was flipping through a book of poultry breeds and the moment I saw the Delaware it was a done deal. Originally my plan was to have a flock of excellent egg layers and a flock of excellent meat birds. Well that went out the window.

Right now we aren't in the place to have chickens. We were hit pretty hard by the economy and are currently renting part of a house. I don't really know where I was going with this post. My brain kinda went blank...
