You are on the west coast and I am on the east coast. I would definitely visit and maybe get some chicks from your male +female shown.

hey everyone, i was wondering if anyone knows how to get a delaware blue hen chicken or knows someone who does. i dont necessarily need a pure bred one just one that has some of the looks. currently in the delaware /MD/PA area but i'd be bringing her back home for a present for my mother

thanks in advance,

Pea combed delawares?
With frostbite now a serious problem to worry about, if I use a Dominique rooster over New Hampshire hens, would a so called, 'Delaware' come out only with a pea comb? I know it wouldn't be up to APA. But just some food for thought. Thanks in advance!

That is an interesting question. Thanks to you I have spent the better part of my night looking over the SOP and doing a little googling

. It seems from what I know of the barring gene that you would get the desired color pattern “Delaware”. Both Barred Plymouth Rocks and Dominique’s color patterns are caused by a sex linked color gene. This accounts for the lighter coloration found in the males of these breeds. I believe that in both breeds this is an expression of the same gene. Am I correct?

Looking at the SOP there are several differences between the Dominique and the Plymouth Rock besides comb type (weight, tail carriage, color, etc.). I would guess that the F1 generation would be off standard given the considerable differences between Dominique’s and Plymouth Rocks. You have said that you aren’t aiming for SOP here, although with time and selective breeding you probably could produce a Delaware with the desired comb.

I am by no means claiming to be an expert, so I hope someone else chimes in. I would love to hear what others have to say. I love genetics and always look forward to learning more.

Wow, thanks Walt, high praise indeed! On the hackle, it's kind of odd, it used to be more strongly marked. Of the 6 Del cockerels we had, 2 were pure white (??), 3 had rather pale hackle and tail markings, and Rexx here had the best barring. The pure whites grew the fastest, matured first, and were biting the pullets a lot - so they got pulled out first. Sometimes I wonder if we should have kept another of the Dels instead of the Partridge Rock, who is kind of ungentle with the hens. Rexx is teaching him though...

I just acquired two Del hens, Ella and Bella and would love to see more on the breed. I am also looking for a fella for Ella and Della.

If anyone is selling eggs, chicks or any age rooster, let me know.

:lol SNORT! Oh dear! Excuse me!

In all seriousness, I think Kathy is the closest to FFF. She's in Missouri Farm. Give her a shout out tomorrow and I bet if she can't provide you with a good set of eggs, she'll know who's the closest to you to do so. She might even have a young cockerel or two coming up as well. Good luck. Now how about posting some pictures of Ella and Bella!? We'd love to see them!

I've got 3 little Delaware beauties, 2 hens & 1 Roo!

I would really like to know if they're cross-breeds or not!? They're still small and I think they're bantams actually! Can anyone help?!
