Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Small and light. I have one that was given to one of my kids for his night time flash light. I think it is a dollar store one probably cost a dollar. It is perfect as it sit just under the egg and very little light seeps out and I can easily cover that with my hand. Also, because it doesn't weigh much, I can handle the eggs better and have less risk of dropping it.

Who is Paul Harter in MO and does he have a good stock of Dels? Please send his info..

Not sure of the quality, but I've been contemplating ordering some of his birds. I need to see more pictures, before I do though.

Lisa, not sure what the conversation was about green legs, but it is a genetic issue, and there is great info on the Del site about it. You should NOT have green legs on your Dels.

Paul breeds for egg and meat production first, which should mean a good body on the birds. He told me the roo on the website was the one he used last year, and he thought he had a bit better one for this year.

I'm pondering Bill Braden's stock and have been in contact with him. I wish I could find a whole bunch of eggs to just pick out the best chicks myself. Does anyone know of ( and I know I'm gonna get slapped for this) a hatchery buying from a valid breeder that I could get my starter stock from? I'm thinking if I started with several hundred then weed down to the best 10 or so. I did that last year with a local guy and had pretty good luck with the hens but had NO luck with ANY roosters. So sad.

I'd also consider a breeder who won't charge me an arm and a leg for eggs.

Thanks,

Dave

Your best bet would probably be going with Privett.

My Delaware chicks moved out yesterday to a temporary chicken tractor. Once the new 12 x 10 coop is done, they will be moved in there with the old girls (who will be hens in less than a month!), some Blue, Splash and project Lav Ameraucanas and some Marans/Silkies.

Throughout the day, we have had four hawk attacks. We have four hawks in the neighborhood. One of the hawks got injured when attacking the chickens! It got it's wing caught in between the run and our yard fence. Poor thing, we had to call animal control to come get it.

We have the framed run for the new coop being set up this week, and until the new coop is done it will be the run for the Del chicks. Now they're trapped up in the tractor because of the hawks.

One chick I'm uncertain on, but I am hoping female. Otherwise I have a trio, and my dwarf male. I will wait a little longer to make sure the dwarf needs to be culled. If it ends up just needing a little more attention, and doesn't crow (which Cyn says dwarfs hardly do), than it will stay with us.

Have a nice evening everyone.

Thanks for passing on the link. KathyinMo recommended Paul Harter's birds to me when I was trying to find some. I talked to Paul and I think I am going to make the drive over to pick them up when they are ready, but he will ship day old chicks (25 min).

I talked to Paul today, and he feels the roo he is using this year is better than the one on his website, if that helps anyone make any decisions.

I have 6 nice little Delaware hens from my last year's effort culling down from 500 but I had no roosters worth the time. Do any of y'all living in or around Kansas City, MO, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Arkansas have a good quality rooster that you'd sell me for this year's breeding project? I appreciate it.

Dave
