Show off your Peas!

Besides size I have read here to look for 'wispy' feathers at the base of the tail for signs of being male. Is that a good indicator? I kind of hope not as I see them on most all my young birds even ones I now are hens. (Do we call them pullets? and cockerels?)

Congrats on finding someone to do fecal floats for you! Are they reasonable cost or did you ask? By looking at my vets equipment it looks like one of the most often used tools in the office.

Thanks, I didn't even ask for a price, I was in shock.

I went to this new place because the one I've been using really upset me. I found this kitten 2 weeks ago along the road and brought her home. Of course she had the usual fleas, ear mites, roundworms, conjunctivitis, and upper respiratory infection. I took her in for an office visit, exam, one dose of revolution, and a combo test. My bill ended up being $308.00 for a found-along-the road kitten. They said she was too feral to draw blood without anesthesia, I offered to hold her for them, but they insisted on doping her up. I've volunteered with feral cats and this kitten isn't feral. That bill really ticked me off! Yesterday's bill for the same kitten, office visit, new patient exam, 2 vaccinations and ear drops because the revolution didn't kill the ear mites.............$86.00, and that vet rolled his eyes when I told him she was too feral for the other office to handle. Taking all that into consideration, I'm guessing a fecal is going to be reasonably priced.

As for the wispy feathers, I don't trust them. Right now my bronze hens have more wispy tail/train feathers than the males do.

I'm going to start a thread about this light colored patch of feathers. This is one of my bronze hen chicks probably 4 1/2 months old now, and this light spot isn't white. It's a creamy tan color, the other hen has a couple white feathers, but this one doesn't, just this lighter patch. Just wondering if this is normal on bronze??

Wow that is an EXPENSIVE BILL for a little kitten!

That's how I felt, and yesterday the new vet had no problem examining and vaccinating my little 3 lb. FERAL WILDCAT. I have no problem paying a fair price for services, but when I start to feel I'm being ripped-off I get a bit ticked!

It does seem like that bill was a little bit high for just that little bit.

Your new vet is more aligned with our country vets pricing. We got pretty much the same service as you did for your kitty, can't find the invoice right now, for about the same price but I always say to shop around. It can be hard to leave someone who you are comfortable with but once you realize they are taking advantage of you it gets easier doesn't it.
