Show off your Peas!

I'm assuming that the roost they are perching on one-leggedly is a wood 2x4 set horizontally so they sit on the wide flat side, and is not a metal purlin. Since a metal purlin would be awfully cold....

But if you would like to provide a significant QOL improvement, wrap that 2x4 with carpeting and staple on the underside (so no staples encounter pea feet ever)... you can actually spread a layer of glue when you wrap, which will make it not shift or move when they land. My peas like the carpet-wrapped board MUCH better than the old not wrapped one.

I do not recommend heat tape, since using the wrong kind of heat tape can burn pea toes as badly as frost bite, and result in terminal injuries (feet falling off). So I don't think heat tape is safe.

But plain carpet, glued down and stapled underneath is just wonderful.
the board is a 2 by six sideways so they have good room....and there is two of them...one lower then that one...and the carpet idea is great my friend works at a carpet store...he could get me some for free....and yes I was wondering on thoughts of the heat tape as it would not be hard to install....I think it would make it more comfy for them...with just the carpet but would love to get the heat tape but without people advice I don't wanna try something and have it go wrong...so anyone elses thoughts of the heat tape...I have seen on peafowl breeders websites that they show you how to make the heat tape and how to install it...I think it was leggspeafowl.com...but not to sure...that's a great site they go thru on how to breed for certain types and such...a lot of great info on that site

Thx q8!! And WOW that's a lot dough looks like uve been bitten by the bird bug

lol...yes you have no idea...and the future plans...man the bank account wont be getting bigger any time soon....that's for sure

I'm on my phone, but there's a thread from a couple months ago where we talked about heat tape. There's some kind that get too hot, pea feet get burned and shrivel. There's photos. Some kind of tape don't get as hot, I don't wanna risk pea feet to whether I found safer kind. I totally freaked when I saw photos.
Look for old thread, hard to do from phone. Am still scanning computer & communing with antivirus people

While birdman55 and Birdrain92 have similar screen names, I can tell that birdman55 loves getting advise and accepting it a whole lot more. Sorry I just had to say it.

I think the heated roosts are a good idea with the temps upper MI gets. Just be really careful on the tape that you buy to do it. As I remember, the thread involved told which was the problem kind. Yes peas are pretty hardy, but they are a tropical bird and we get really cold. If you can keep the wind off them and heated roosts available it will add a lot to their comfort. I haven't chimed in on the question of peas and ducks together because I haven't done it much. I do have 2 hens that have been housed housed with my ducks since early summer but I don't have a pond in there, I use kiddie pools for them. The only time it may be a problem is breeding season if they don't have enough room. Hopefully Destinduck will see this and contribute, because advice coming from someone who has done it is a whole lot better than the "I thinks".

ive seen the mallard lane website...they are high in price compared to some of the breeders here in Michigan and the Midwest...for example you can get mandarins at 60 pair from a breeder compared to the 200-250 a pair...that would just be one example...otherwise if I didn't meet the people I have met so far I would have bought from that....I have been lucky in my findings I guess...except for the first bird transaction I ever did...I totally got ripped....but had great luck since...in the bird world im not to lucky with most things...

Mallard Lane Farms has great birds. I have a mixed collection like that of destinduck and my ornamental ducks, pheasants, and opal trio do fine together. I have never had any health issues with that either. My ducks are not that messy but keeping the water clean is a pain especially with dabblers and puddle ducks. I usually would change the water at least twice a day. This year I am thinking of using nipple water drinkers so that the water stays clean all of the time. It is nice having a mixed collection for sure. Pinola Preserve raises ornamental waterfowl in state-of-the-art aviaries with all sorts of various species, but I do not believe that they raise peafowl. You can watch the webcams on their website (www.pinola.net). You will likely see ducks, geese, wading birds, cranes, pheasants, and I have seen much more.

My peas will sometimes sleep in the pens at night but there free ranging and they normally just stay on the roost until they can come out.
