I let Peep out today. He is so tame I can let him out without worrying but I don't leave him out. I put him back in the pen because he is to precious to me to let him stay out of the pen all the time.

"Come down from there!"

Okay mommy....

Peep loves to display when I let him out of the pen. He is happy to show off his first eye feathers...He has about 5 that I have noticed, there might be more that are just hidden..

Walking around displaying....I guess this would be like strutting...

Looking for weeds to eat while displaying...

Here is Alto:

I hope everyone is has a good Christmas...I was thinking about something I could do to treat the peafowl on Christmas...One Christmas the peafowl got an automatic waterer but it didn't work....I would like a new pen for Christmas! Haha

So i have a slight issue and imthinking this may be the reason pearl was at rhe auction to begin with.
The chickens laid an egg yesteday they r pullets so it spurratic and it was late in the day and chilly oout so i was just going to get it when i penned them in.
About an hour later my bf says ur light brown peacock is running around with that egg.
She had broken and eaten it and was playing with the shell

How do i stop this behavior?. Ps the chickene have a nestbox to use which would solve this. They just havent gotten that memo yet apparently

oh and on another note.
all of my birds are 2012 hatch except pearl so i know she has seen snow.
and today we got snow for the first time.
only about an inch .
but i just opened the shed door for everyone.
ducks came running out like nuthin was going on .
chickens- 2 of 4 came out to eat, and ran back inside after a few bites.
and the peas. lol well. 5 of the 6 would not even get off the perch just sat there staring. one brave pied ventured to the door to stare out a few moments but i have yet to see anyone venture outside.

With the egg eating you will need to increase her protein. Birds eat eggs because they crave the protein in the yolk. Most people think it is because of calcium deficiency but more often it is a protein deficiency. I add pond fish food to the diet as it is meat based protein that is very helpful to them. Around here it is $15 a 50# bag which is cheaper than cat food and a heck of a lot better for them, comes in a small pellet or kibble and easy to mix into the food.
I am not a big fan of commercial foods for animals and usually mix a lot of my own.

i miss my own also using different commercial food tho. altho their feed has been changed since the move and they are only getting turkey pellets (which have a higher protein) and oats.

i just dont want the egg eating to be a habbit . i dont care about the chicken eggs but when she lays this year i dont want her eating them.
so i guess i will try to up their protein.

i thought maybe they just got too curious and busted it by accident and realized it was good.

Well, for sure they will clean up a busted egg. It is in their nature not to keep anything around that will draw predators and a broken egg will so they gladly will clean it all up. So if it got cracked or busted in some way they were just helping out.

We recently finished a pond and stocked it with fish so we have some fish food and I think I am going to try it and see if they like it. I think mine need some more protein because now that their grass is gone there are not many bugs in the pen and the two peachicks from this year are not growing like they should. They are about half the size they should be and every day I get them in a corner and stuff them full of dried meal worms trying to get lots of protien into them. I think part of the problem is competition from other birds. That is why I am working on the new pen. I will definately try the fish food I didn't even think about that and the pellets will be smaller which I found I needed because the dog food and cat food we have fed them before was larger than I would have liked.
