LOL.... I really did pull out the standard and TRY to find the proper vocabulary for the EAR Tufts....

I will look at her wing carefully tomorrow.... Either way Split or weak wings would be BAD and a reason to not to keep for breeding.
I didn't think the black striping was right either...

HOW COMMON is a split wing issue in this breed ? ?

So, it looks like she needs to find a new home where the folks just want an egg layer.

Lisa, the split wing, weak wing, twisted wing are in all breeds of chickens. Don

Lisa, I assume this pullet is a hatch mate to #1 right. I believe these pullets are cross bred to something that has laced feathers and diagonal spangling..

The spangling on the #2 pullet is good for her age. When raising spangled chickens I have always had the early feathering to show as young fowl and the darker that will feather up correctly are an older age,

Will send you an email and explain some of these in more depth and you can decide if you want it posted. Don

You are 100 % correct. These two were part of the ones I received from one breeder. They don't all have these markings and some are much better in size.
HOWEVER, I am saving those for LAST...

Yes, that is right

the good ones will be uploaded last!

I want everyone who is following this thread to LEARN what to avoid OR what to watch out for.
It is to easy for folks to be taken advantage of because they don't know what to look for!

For all those wondering .... Don sent me this email

I want to emphasize is the last part of Don's statement . .. We have to work with what we have on this breed. Show Quality is too rare!
I found some folks that have had their SS for many years. I ordered eggs and chicks from a couple of these folks and I am waiting to receive some in the fall from a third person.

Currently, I have 22 pullets and and 6 cockerels that I am going to select from. If I can find a decent two or three pullets and a cockerel to start with then I will be fine.
They won't be show quality.... but I will be able to work that way. My goals are simple, pick a fault or two to work on and make each generation better.

The next two pullets are going to be from the second person.... Let's see how these ladies do under Don's discerning eye.

pullet # 3 - - - This lady is 17 weeks old...
I don't think these ladies have done their Juvie molt yet.... The cockerels that are the same age as showing some fluff at the base of the tail and occasional lose wing feather. So, she may of started the molt, but has not finished it yet.

Head looks better - - less white on the neck. I see the black lines and little tiny white spangles.... So nice coloring potential in the future.

Legs and body and tail

leg shanks are the correct pinkish white
Tail angle looks good
Back length is good
Body - she is younger than the previous two and bigger than one of them for sure. She is showing some of the feather striping , but not as much as the previous one.

WING - - Oh Oh, There is that partridge pattern on the wing...
What are the possibilities that the partridge pattern would molt out over the next month ? ?

The girl does have the WALK... you know the Chicken Model Walk . ..

I KNOW the ladies from this breeder are from a hatchery. They have been privately held and bred for many years.... but they did originate from a hatchery.

DON, is there anything good about this one?
Do you think she is better than the previous two?

How do you rate her coloring or is there no way to tell until after she finishes the Juvie molt?

What needs improvement on her the most?

Don, I really wish I could just open you head up and see all the answers to my questions.....

SNOWBIRD - -

Check out the young cockerel in the background.... He has a NICE chest developing IMHO

I can't see his foot band, but I think he is the sibling to pullet # 3.
I know he has WAY TOO MUCH WHITE, but size he is showing good size potential...

Thank you for posting those pics! I am pretty sure mine are both pullets! They are a little over the 7 week mark, and both look similar to your pullet picture. Do all Roos have a whiter chest?

You are welcome....

NO the roosters do not always have a white chest. I've been told that you do not want a rooster with a lot of white on the chest. Too many spangles on the roo leads to too many spangles on the hens....

Snowbird has actually breed SS before, so he can let us know if I am off base with what I have heard.....

Hi Lisa, The type and color on this pullet is different in all ways. For the age the amount of white is just about right. She has a nice Head, Tail and Back. Her color except for the odd ball color on the secondary wing feathers is great. Where you see a lot of this horizontal spangling is in the Sicilian Buttercup.

You might need to contacy Walt Leonard and ask him if he has any idea of where this striping is coming from.

I know I see this on the Welsummer females. Don

Lisa, this male is what you will need over the female that have less spangling than what is required. He must not develop white feathers in tail section.

We still need to start weighing these young fowl as we go along as it will greatly affect the fowl you should decide to keep as breeders. Don
