I was looking at my SS from Ideal the other day and everyone of them have big fat white feathers on the wings. The way three of them were holding their wings I couldn't see it until I snatched them up and took a peek. Darn it. Stormlady, even with any faults your SS have, overall I like them very much. Too bad Cackle cannot ship to Virginia or I would get a few SS from them.

I hear the area I am supposed to get my SS flock from is without power and has been terribly flooded. The breeders have a pretty large farm and raise all sorts of stuff, so I don't know if they were able to find good places to put everything or not. Hopefully they were on high ground, but I did see a picture in the area where the water was up at least 10 feet, so I am worried not only about getting my birds, but also about how the people there are doing. I'll just have to wait and see. Hard to say how long it will be before I can get hold of them though.

RE the res champ pic........it is a picture, so the perspective may be off but a Sussex should slope from front to back as Edgar says. Edgar is quite expert with SS, so I would say ....listen to his advice/comments.

Hello all, When we did the critique on these SS hens we did it with the hens having the potential of being able to raise some APA SOP SS from them. I did not critique them on being show Quality SS. With everything they had going for them I thought it would be nit picking to bring up that they needed a slight slope to the back. When we are trying to get a few yards going with SS as possible SOP breeders I believe it is more important to look at the entire SS when selecting SS for breeders. Granted I am not a poultry Judge but have looked down the back of a few SS.

Thankyou, I read that and then went back and looked and the pictures and too me the pictures of the hens looked very similar to the Champion hen and didn't really understand. I doesn't take much to confuse me. LOL but I understand now. thanks for the explaination.

Hey Sandy you girls are pretty. Mine seem a little too white but they are younger then yours. Actually the htchery sent mine marked as brown leghorns, but when they started feathering good I could see they were SS. Actually you ordering yours made me want some, but never ordered them, but ended up with 2 anyway

They are my oldest daughters favorites. She says they are eyepopping

Thanks Sheila!! I would be in heaven if somebody accidently sent me some on mistake! LOL I would love to see pictures of your babies!! I think that the SS are the absolute best birds ever to me they have it all, looks , personality, their great foragers (they hide really really good. LOL but they come running when you call em thats always a plus! Uno was super white as a chick but not anymore, however she has a super huge comb and thats a no-no! Anyway I love this thread! Im going to be trying to find a boy for some of the girls soon so I will be looking hard from here on out for him. Sandy

When you are evaluating a breed by the APA Standard of Perfection you are looking at them from a show perspective.

The slope to the back is one thing that separates them from a Rock or a Red and too many Champion English SS do not slope.

Some judges get caught up in the color and forget breed type. mho

I'll get some pic this afternoon. Right now I'm trying to make some pies before it gets too warm. I'm making custard and an Amish Bob Andy pie to use up some of these eggs.

Im so sorry! I sure forgot they came from Cackle! I always use Ideal and been very happy with them, but I was so desperately wanting more SS (and everywhere was sold out) I asked Rural King to special order them for me, not remembering that they use Cackle. One of the SS (Hailey has quite a bit white in her wings but she is lighter than all the others so..... but no solid white wings or tail feathers I got real lucky with this bunch of chicks I think.
Thankyou for the compliments on them!

I pray that you get your chicks or eggs and all goes well with them, I too am praying that everyone in the storm torn areas are doing well! I have family on the Islands that were hit and and more in the upper states hit by the hurricane but my nieces husband called and they all came through alright, alot of damage to the land but the folks are ok. Thanks to God ! Sandy
