Another one of my Roo's from the past "Chief" I really liked him but the Roos were picking on each other. I'm hopefully getting him back next month.

I'll get some better pics later...too dark out now. I've got a couple pullets that are looking really nice! I'll try to snap some pictures of them tomorrow.

GLAD to see you finally stop lurking....

What JUMPS out when I look at this roo is TWO things
First the white in the wing and tail....
The standard says ....

COLOR - MALE
Tail: Main tail feathers --- BLACK and WHITE
Sickles, Coverts, and smaller coverts - - - Lustrous, greenish black tipped with white

Wngs:
Fronts and Bows: Lustrous mahogany bay each feather tipped with white, a narrow elongated V shaped black bar dividing white from balance of feather
Coverts: Mahogany bay, each feather tipped with a large white spangle, a black bar dividing the white from balance of feather.
Primaries - - black and white
Secondaries - - outer web, bay edged with white
inner web, black edged with white, each feather ending with a white spangle

However, I think Sewell's print does a better job of SHOWING how different the white is from the standard.

The second thing that jumps is his size. .... to me his size looks good. All my cockerels are still young, so I am not the best to judge size.
He looks Wide ( To me and I may be way wrong) in the chest and back. This would be good.
I do think his back is a little short. A nice long back hen would help offset this.

Size is hard to tell by a photo - -- The standard says...

WEIGHTS: Hen 7 lbs, Pullet 6 lbs, Cock 9 lbs, Cockerel 7 1/2 lbs.

My marans roo is right at 9 lbs and he looks like a tank when he starts walking my way...
He is also over a year old. How old is your boy? Have you weighed him?

The problem with using a roo that has too much white is if the hens have a lot of white.... the roo will cause the next generation to be even more white.
You hens seem to be very white, so the best roo for them would be one with just a little white.

NOW, Don or Walt can join us and as usual correct my mis-speaks

I think the birds are really ugly and look nothing like what they actually look like(at least color-wise). I don't like how a lot of the SS I've seen pictures of have more of a red-ish look to them. I like a deeper mahogany color with lots of speckles. I have a couple of heavy-white hens but I'll use them with a lighter marked Roo. Of course this is just my preference/opinion.

I know you have showed a few of your birds..... What have the judges said about the "correct" color?

Do they say it doesn't matter whether the birds are more red-ish or deeper mahogany ?

I think the standard uses the term "Mahogany bay" to describe the color that should be on them.....

Earlier we had discussed that the print was not correct on beak color.... but it does a really good respresentation of body shape.

When I google the term "Mahogany bay ", I got all kinds of hits talking about bay horses....

THIS is a MAHOGANY BAY horse

Where as this bay horse is a "BLOODY BAY"

I'm not showing my girls but I found this thread and pretty interesting and learning more about my SS.
My girls don't have that much speckled like others in this thread. I hope they will get more speckled then they get older. They are so pretty with speckled!!!
Thanks for sharing info and pics. I really enjoying them

This is a good question! I have been wondering exactly what color mahogany bay is, too. Also, what exactly is horn color for the beaks? And is the color of the legs and feet in the print correct? They look so white like the beak color. I think that I need a color chart! It must be too many years of using paint charts for exact colors!

The colors used on mammals are not usually the same as you would find in birds/chickens. The SS has a deep, dark mahogany and keep iin mind that it is not possible to eactly show color on computer monitors ........they are all calibrated a bit differently...like TV's.

Alright Walt, that did not help a lot....
Could you find us the closest possible example of the proper "mahogany bay" hue.

It doesn't really matter what you find it on - - - mammal, poultry, or color chart.
We realize it is impossible to show the EXACT color because every computer monitor is different.... but get us closer than we are now.
