Showgirl thread- for posting pictures and discussing breed!

Is there any way to keep my rooster from crowing? He does not crow every morning, and I have never heard him crow during the day. If he is "less dominant" (not that he is mean in any way!!!) will he be happy with his hens and not sing in the morning?

I have found the nacked necks in general do not crow alot and tend to be pretty laid back. Now there are threads about crowing if you do a search on here but I don't believe there is any foolproof way to stop him. It is a good thing he only crows in the morning. My other breeds crow all day long!!!

Maybe if he doesn't crow often, the neighbors will be OK with it? If you really like him, I would wait to see how it goes???

Two more partridge showgirl chicks and one partridge silkie. The mom is lavender (self blue), so my chances of lavender showgirls is increasing. Just have to be patient! Soon as she recovers from brooding, I'm going to put her in the lavender pen to assure more lavs.

I feel your concern. I have a little Polish roo that I INSISTED was a girl...he just wouldn't listen and started crowing anyway. The houses are so close together in my part of town, one of them LITERALLY IS the property line to my property...I could touch every neighbors house on all three sides with a 10foot pole or less. Your boy sounds very similar. Only crows a bit in the morning (mine does when the fire trucks go by also, but to be fair there are about 15 big 'ol dogs that howl and fuss along with him) and otherwise is quiet ALLL day and night. Both my other half and I noticed that he does it FIRST when he realizes Mike is awake and feeding the cats....then AGAIN when I come downstairs and start my routine.

Perhaps your roo has a routine that he is accustomed to?

If we go out right away when Weeble starts his crowing, pick him up, pet him for a few minutes, then put him down and distract him with his favorite treats....he usually is done for the day.

So far we haven't had any complaints....we've been darned lucky, and we talk about "plan B" all the time. Just in case a new renter moves into one of the houses and doen't think 5 or 6 tiny banty crows at 9 or 10:am is excusable.

Does your ordinance allow you to keep some chickens? Do you know any of your neighbors? If it were me, I would first find out what the penalty is if you are "reported" for having a rooster. If the penalty is that you have to get rid of him, but you are not fined....Personally I would keep him until a complaint is lodged. It might NEVER happen, or it might take years. You can always have a contingency plan.

If you know your nighbors, maybe you could talk to them about him. Tell them he is very dear to you, ask if it bothers them...perhaps there is a way you can work with a neighbor or neighbors that have specific concerns? They may not care at all.... How long has he been crowing now? How close are your neighbors?

Okay, I have a question that has probably been beaten to death. But I'm gonna ask it anyway. Please be patient with me, I would appreciate the input.

I keep hearing that breeding show.Xshow. will produce "more nakedness"....

Will continued breeding like that produce a completely naked bird eventually?
Will that breeding result in a "non-silkied" feather type?
Will it eventually reduce the fullness of feathering on the crest?
Will it reduce the extreme to which the skull is domed?
Will it reduce the amount of feathers on the toes and legs until they are bare?
OR

Will the neck end up completely bare, but feathered toes, crest feather fullness, dome size and body shape be determined by the showgirl stock that you start with... i.e. both have good domes and toe feathers, offspring are likely to have the same without bowtie?
