Showgirls considered full bred or mutt?

Do they do genetic tests on other animals to prove that they are purebred before showing?

Bob

Yes and No. All other livestock have breed societies which maintain herd records. Registered Angus, as an example, must come from other registered animals. I'm using them as an example since there is a genetic test to prove if an unknown animal is one or not (not that it could be registered, but hey maybe someone wants to know).

As far as fairs go, though, animals just have to have "apparent breeding". I've seen very few requiring all entrants to be registered, with some exceptions in dairy goats.

That is what I think too, with slight addition of 'any breed that accepts Blue'. After all, Splash is the pure form of Blue. Splash silkies look nice.. however splash birds in some breeds might not look as nice maybe?

Is a sizzle considered an AOV Silkie?

And thanks for asking about the showgirls. I'd wondered about that myself, as I was pondering the sizzle / frizzle idea for showing.

A sizzle would also be considered an AOV silkie.

ETA: Just because it's a sizzle doesn't mean it's showable...it still must follow the silkie standard (eg. no single combs, must have 5 toes, feathering down middle toe, etc) or it will be DQed.

Cool. If you had a silkie/cochin cross hen bred to a frizzle male, then the chicks are sizzles if they have 5 toes & frizzles if they have 4 toes?

Frizzle is a gene, not a breed. Any breed can have a frizzled gene. Just because a bird doesnt match the standard for a silkie doesn't necessarily mean that it can be shown as another breed.

I also want to add that you should never breed a frizzle x frizzle, as you will get around 25% curly.

Frizzled cochins are recognized, but, as far as I know, that is the only breed where it is recognized. If you really wanted to, you could show any breed as a frizzle, but it would need to be entered as an AOV.

Thanks for all the info, LilPeeps. My daughter traded her silkie roo for a frizzle cochin roo at the show last Saturday and wants to breed him. I really wanted to go with showgirls next, but darling daughter has fallen in love with a Frizzle
