I HATE SNAKES! Last summer we had a wood pile near the coop and after countless eggs lost to these snakes, I insisted that the wood pile go to the tree line. Today I saw one in the garden. I read that snakes are repelled by certain strong odors. I know this soap is recommended to repel deer, rabbits, etc. Since I have it shredded in little cloth bags I thought I would hang them around the nesting boxes in the coop. But now I am worried about the intense odor repelling my girls. Anyone have advise? I have killed a snake but boyfriend thinks it is risky behavior and wants me to stop trying to be the snake slayer.

But rat snakes are so good to have around. They keep mice away and that is a great help. They also are very friendly and will not hurt anybody. a few eggs lost won’t hurt, but rat snakes around here are such a big help with slugs and even mice and rats.

Kota I am with you the only good snake is dead one others act like oh well.
And we only have garter snakes out here

well maybe the snakes aren't rat snakes, I one I encountered this morning reared up at me. I sprayed it away with the garden hose. I just don't want to annoy the chickens with the soap odor.
