I am doing research for setting up my first coop and I have read that shredded paper can be used. Is that shredded white paper or can you use shredded newspaper or will the ink on the paper hurt the girls?

I am doing research for setting up my first coop and I have read that shredded paper can be used. Is that shredded white paper or can you use shredded newspaper or will the ink on the paper hurt the girls?

I personally would avoid colored newspaper inserts because there could be lead in the ink.

I burn regular newspaper in the woodstove just to get the fire started, and feed the ashes to my chickens in their dustbaths, which they do eat. Shredded white paper should be fine, too in my opinion, as long as it isn't getting wet (I worry about dioxins at that point).

All this is just my opinion- I am no scientist.
