I was pleasantly surprised when I brought home 4 new ducks. The first 3 days, every time I got close to them, they ran to the crate I had them sleeping in (separated from my flock).
But after I started letting them roam around, they figured out where I give out treats, and which bin the treats (scratch grain) are in. So when I go to that bin now, they come running. As scared as they were for the first few days, it didn’t take them long to warm up.
I do have other ducks and chickens running around the yard, so that could have eased things. Plus they are adults.
I somewhat agree with moving slowly, but I also don’t change my routine. When I go out to feed, I move where I want to move, and at the speed I need to go. If I’m in a hurry, I may have to walk thru them. But of course I try not to scare them.
They will eventually get used to you. Friendly ducks are not as common as you may think. Ducks are very wary of humans, even ones that know you aren’t going to hurt them. Jmho.
