So I have flocks of different kinds of ducks. They all do fine during winter except for my Aussie Spot bantams and I am trying to figure out why and what they need different from my standard size ducks.
I keep my Aussie Spots separate from the chickens and large ducks.
My bantam ducks thrive during summer and as soon as the weather gets cold and rainy in the fall they lose weight, lose vigor and bathe less when all of my other ducks are still doing great and it puzzles me.
I do know I have coccidiosis, infectious coryza and tapeworms on my property unfortunately. I dewormed everything a few months ago and probably should again. I thought ducks were more immmune to chicken diseases?? Why would winter time make my ducks lose vigor but not summer time? I understand cold weather is hard on everything but it hasn't gotten that cold yet and its only September. If it is the diseases and parasites that indeed are the problem why do most of my ducks thrive then?
I am getting ivermectyn, tapeworm specific meds and antibiotics soon in am attempt to get them healthier and eliminate losses. I know to treat each med separately and not all at once.
I do not have the funds to get a vet diagnosis. I already did that last year and the vet did-not know what was wrong but "speculated" it was bacterial and prescribed expensive antibiotics that did not work. So far I have not lost any bantam ducks this year but I fear I will lose some if I can't solve the problem soon. I have rooster booster vitamins and niacin for the mean time.
I really want to help my duckies they are so smart and so sweet. Any ideas?? TIA
