sick EE New UPDATE road to recovery

Great minds think alike: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=56204

If
you have a fast connection you might consider downloading the entire text: Avian Medicine Principles and Applications. The primary focus is on exotics/parrots. However, it has a good chapter on galliformes (with diseases listed so one can refer back to the chapters covering the individual offenders). Has a good formulary, surgery in detail, etc. (1138 pages, total). Most info standard for any species, unless otherwise specified.

Page 830 in the chapter on neonatology has a photo of a chick, the legs of which are braced by using sponge/foam blocks of various sizes to hold legs in correct position. You might try shaping some to fit on ankle that is swollen (prevent further deterioration due to pressure).

From the formulary:

"ACETYLSALICYLIC ACID - Aspirin (Butler; Vedco)
Available as tablets (5 or 60 grain) for oral administration. Also
available as 1.25 grain orange-flavored chewable tablets. May be
effective as an analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory agent
in some avian species. May be indicated to prevent clot formation
and embolisms secondary to egg-related peritonitis, granulomatous
diseases and shock. Uricosuric at low doses and may be
effective in some cases of acute and chronic gout. A five grain tablet" [1grain-60mg so reg 325mg will do] (my brackets).
"can be mixed in 30 ml of diluent and administered at a dose of 0.5
ml/kg, TID (or 1 tablet per pint of drinking water)."

You did well with your sling for her. Eventually, he learned how to get out of it by ducking his head through a leg hole and just sliding out. Smart boy, my Zane. He's still with me and it's been a year since he was hurt. He'll never have the use of the leg, but it no longer gets infected in the joint.

Admirable venture. Your tenacity to save your bird is close to unrivaled. I have the greatest respect for your endeavors. When i get old and sick, would you come and take of me??? Great job!!!!!!!

well since PC brought this post back to life I will give an update on Sweat pea

She is still in her swing, every night I do PT on her leg. I was hoping by now she would start using it again now that the infection is clear and she has been on the antibiotics for 5 days.

But she still cant use it. She still has a great appitite and is pooping plenty lol

I am most afraid of the muscles dying so I think the physical therapy is essential.

I will be glad when I dont have to shove a pill down her beak since that is the one thing she really hates, her another meds she drinks freely from a small cup she is that good.

I am thinking maybe a splint would help md I collected foam yesterday to make a go of it.

My biggest concern is her ability to get around she cant stay in her sling forever.

Thanks guys for your sweet words im not nearly as nice as you might think just as the quail that went to freezer camp the other day

So its been so nice here I though sweet Pea could use some more visits outside for her moral. After seeing her try to use her bad leg but not being able to keep her foot open and flat I decided to make a splint for her s well. looks like she likes it

hopefully it will help give her strength and make her start using it again. After several hours of play and such she went back to her sling for the night. We are defiantly making progress just very slowly.

Aspirin dosage

Crush one low-dose aspirin and dissolve into a quart of water.
Shake the mixture often to keep mixed.

Can be given by dropper or as drinking water.

That sling is very impressive- I see that you supervise meticulously, and I sure hope the pullet improves.

How is everyone managing today?
