Firstly I am new to the BYC forums so hello to all from sunny Spain.
I have kept chickens for around ten years but never have had any problems until now.
Just recently I built a new run and stocked it with 14 red hybrid point of lays, they are fed top quality layers pellets but are also able to graze on grass and insects in their run.
All seemed fine until a week ago I noticed 2 were making gurgling sounds and sneezing with clear nasal discharge, but they seem fine in as much as they are alert, eating and drinking and acting like normal hens.
I have added a little ACV to their water (20mml per liter of water) which appeared to help, One hen in particular sounded really bad but the next day appeared normal, although I have noticed a slight gurgle from her again. Now I have two very lethargic hens, heads in and hunched up. They still go into the coop but remain away from the flock, one has now eyes shut and on one leg.
Spain does not appear to have many avian experts or at least near the Town I live and in general the chickens I have seen have been kept in terrible conditions. I have asked a local vet for advice but I think my knowledge on chickens is better than the vets which does not fill me with confidence.
Coop well ventilated and cleaned daily, bedding was pine chippings, but I have left this out for the moment using just clean paper each day. Water cleaned daily, no food left out over night. All hens are under a year. I am more than a little confused as most of the symptoms could translate into any of the many chicken illnesses.
Thank you for reading the post
Regards
Kevin
